Lombardi on Reich, Tepper and the Panthers job

Two videos of Mike Lombardi from the Pat McAfee show...

The idea of Reich being "broken" from some of his prior experiences actually make a lot of sense. As mentioned before, some of his choices here were just baffling.

Also, his statement that the job could be considered desirable if it comes with a 6 year guaranteed contract is consistent with what's been said elsewhere.

And McAfee's final comment is correct: Tepper still has to make the right choice.

What part of selecting Reich in the first place was ego?

Reich had several positive aspects in his corner:

  • Winning Record as an NFL HC, with nothing but turnover at QB in IND
  • A SB ring within the past 5-7 years as an OC with PHI
  • Extensive Coaching / Playing experience
  • Had the ties to put together a good staff -- Thomas Brown was lauded in the media as an up and comer, Evero was getting HC interviews, Caldwell, and also Capers as respected advisors.

There was a lot to like about the Reich hire, even if you are one who preferred Wilks (myself). The hire just didn't work out, and firing a guy at 1-10 while the team shows NO signs of improvement; I can't fault him for that.

What Lombardi said about rake having "PTSD" might actually help explain a lot.

Most of the positives that you have about Frank Reich were things that came before the Wentz thing and his last few years with the Colts.

Had we hired the pre-Wentz Frank Reich, maybe things could have gone smoother.

As it is though, no it didn't work out.

He's not wrong here, but Mike Lombardi is a joke in general. He's a Josh McDaniels/Patriots media plant.

I keep seeing these comments about all talking heads and reporters. It makes me wonder if there's anyone believable...or contrarily, maybe they're all shills for someone at the end of the day as they all have experience and are connected to some others--and human nature means that they'll inevitably be softer on some more than others.

The NFL Industrial Complex is just the WWE maybe.

  • A SB ring within the past 5-7 years as an OC with PHI  All Doug Penderson...Frank managed the water boys.
  • Extensive Coaching / Playing experience ... Shame on him for thinking Bryce was going to translate to the NFL.. Which makes it the right move to fire his ass....
  • Had the ties to put together a good staff -- Thomas Brown was lauded in the media as an up and comer, Evero was getting HC interviews, Caldwell, and also Capers as respected advisors.   Capers just worried about dying his hair...looks like Ernest Angley.. Caldwell and Capers are fossils who took free money...And Frank set them up...

Dude, you're first point is so insanely wrong it hurts.  He had Luck his first season in 2018, 2019 he retired before the season and they had jacoby brissett, third year they had the final year of Phillip rivers career, next was Carson Wentz, and his final year in Indy he had Matt Ryan.  In no world did he have andrew luck for "most of it".  also its pretty openly known now that Reich wanted Stroud, Tepper wanted Young, so we took young.

Reich is a trashcan of a coach, but we don't have to make up stuff to prove our point.

    • Yep. It was an obvious red flag that a lot of people ignored. The results/scores in preseason don’t matter, but individual performance very much does and individually, we looked like the least talented team in the league and it carried over.
    • Sorry, but in 2015, we didn’t look like poo to the extent of 2023. People who said it’s just preseason were completely wrong. Simple as that. 2015 was a veteran lead team. It was Cam’s 5th year and Luke’s 4th. Even our OL was 80% the same (added Oher) as the great run to finish 2014 with a playoff win. That year can be labeled as preseason doesn’t matter because I’m sure we rested vets and well, Ron/Mike weren’t putting in special plays, etc. I absolutely don’t recall a bunch of us saying that Turner was getting killed on one on ones or that Luke was completely out of position or that Norman was hurt again but probably fine. The only thing that was right about the 2023 preseason is that the minority of us who saw it, were correct that we A) should have been making Young and others play 100% of the reps as there was nothing to hide and B) the preseason means nothing was a bunch of BS trying to stay optimistic when it was obvious that we had way less good talent than the rest of the NFL.
    • You are telling me Paul Maurice is a better coach than Rod??? Yes!!!  It’s because he plays a better system and has a better goalie.   Our system sucks in playoffs and he refuses to roll with Koochie. Dallas cowboys level poo
