Odd sense of catharsis

So this year has sucked, no way to sugar coat it.

Even those who didn't think we'd be great didn't expect us to be this abysmal. I stopped watching the games a few weeks ago because it was boring and I knew it was going to be a terrible viewing experience. Reich's playcalling and play design have been terrible all season and there was little hope for things improving at all. I was not planning on watching any games if we retained Reich with yet another season with a lame duck coach and or GM who put an uninspired product on the field again in 2024.

But we fired Reich.

Are the optics bad? Yes.

Is the product on the field bad? Yes.

Was hanging onto Reich and potentially ruining our investment in Bryce Young's development better than the bad optics of firing Reich?

I have to say no.

It wasn't working. It's obvious it wasn't working. We were stagnant, not getting better, and regressing as a team overall as the weeks went on. Tepper got it wrong again with the coach he hired. But holding onto Reich does nothing to help this franchise get better. He did the right thing for the team by letting him go.

It's the same thing with Rhule. It was a bad move to hire him in the first place, but it was a good move to let him go.

I don't feel like we are missing out on the next great thing by letting go any of the HC's he has thus far. Patience would not have fixed what those coaches were doing.

Now, do I think we're going to land Ben Johnson or the next great HC prospect this offseason? No, I don't trust Tepper to do that right. At the same time, I DO believe he will move on from a coach and staff who is not very good.

I am okay with getting a culture setter in here even if it means looking for a new coach in 2027. If the likes of Ben Johnson or Frank Smith aren't interested in this gig, I honestly think my top choice would be Harbaugh. He was who I wanted after Johnson pulled out of consideration last year anyway. If he ends up winning a CFP title this year, he has nothing left to accomplish in college football and I think he's itching to prove he can win the big one in the NFL too.

I don't see any way in the world Ben Johnson comes here.

But.....I am wrong about everyting so....

If the Texans after being a dumpster fire for 2 seasons and firing two coaches after 1 year still got the coach they wanted. I will not be surprised if the Panthers land the coach they wanted.
People forget we have a first round pick after next season. So even if we suck again the new HC will have something to work with.
It will not surprised me if we get Ben Johnson.

If we do get Ben Johnson it would not surprise me in the slightest if he absolutely sucks.

Wake me up when Tepper makes a smart hire and then gives the guy the space and freedom to do his job. Because right now this just looks like the same thing repeating itself all over again.

The news about Tepper's weekly meetings probably does a lot of damage to this team's attractiveness.

He'll likely need to come out and promise that's not going to happen if he wants candidates to come here.

He already withdrew once. Big difference.

We have no idea why he withdrew. Wouldn’t be the first time a potential HC decided to go back for another year.
I very much doubt he decided to not interview again because of Tepper. Remember he canceled all his remaining interviews and decided to return to the Lions.

I’m slightly intrigued by Frank Smith. Dynamic play caller of one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL, with a QB of similar pedigree and physical limitations and experience coaching different offensive units in New Orleans and Los Angeles Chargers. Worked his way up through the ranks and certainly earned his stripes. He’d be worth looking at for sure.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
