Panthers should rebuild? (espn article)

It wasn't unreasonable when we were 4-7 and we were led to believe that Jake "I look like I'm shaving points" Delhomme was really the best quarterback option on the team.

I think therein lies your answer. A lot of people think Matt Moore isn't the answer, that he has mopped up a lot of his wins against teams playing at 85 percent or less. Not saying that perception is fair, just that it may be the outsiders' perception of the Carolina Panthers.

the article is from Football Outsiders, not ESPN

this team will get respect when it strings together winning seasons

Every time they seem to show respect for us, i.e. they predict us to go to the superbowl, we usually end up with a mediocre to terrible season. I'd prefer to stay under the radar.

I don't care what the media says. It has no bearing on whether the team wins or loses, zero. I've never understood the respect angle. It's meaningless.

It's always gonna be tough to gain the media's respect... even though I think we have acquired a lot of respect from various teams based on player's individual performances.

I mean correct me if Im wrong but we have a pretty solid team that has:

Good D line with good depth

Good linebackers with depth

Great Running backs, two 1,000 yard rushers

Good O-line with depth

Okay secondary, could use some depth and a better safety.(I think Martin could be a starter, not sold on Godfrey)

good tight ends, all three had over 200 yards

good coaches

ok quarter backs, Delhomme is average at best and Moor is unproven

One good wide reciever, one vet WR(assuming moose stays) and unproven WR.

Our special teams needs work but or punter and kicker will get the job done.

What are we lacking? just one wide reciever thats all, we have two unproven wide recievers, Smith is great, Moose is old but will make plays. Am I missing anything?

You would be better off ignoring anything that comes out of ESPN.

They used to be a reputable Sports News Network a decade ago when I worked for them. I was there from 1994-1997.

Just like every other TV show, they are now all about sensational journalism and ratings. It is impossible to have a 24/7 Sports network that reports the news. They chose to supplement this with nothing more than speculation, rumor, and downright crappy reporting.

That is all.

-take away Peppers and there is no way you can't call that DLine good. A lot of average guys, undersized guys, unproven guys, and rejects. Homer glasses hoping potential people see turns into something isn't a strong enough foundation to call that cast "good".

- QB is a huge question mark w/ all hopes set on Moore turning into a legit starter - he has done enough for that to be a realistic thing.

- 1 legit WR with a bunch of #3s in an offense that relies on a #1 and #2 to be on the field for the majority of snaps ain't a good thing. Finding a legit #2 obviously isn't easy since that has been an issue for years. Moose was a 1 year bandaid in 08. Carolina's main concern should be finding a young WR to groom to replace Smitty....they are way behind on developing this group.

- special teams is garbage - has consistantly been bad over the past 4 years or so. The one year in 08 of decent play isn't enough to consider them better than bad at this stage.

* basically this team has a strong OL and group of RBs. They also have some very strong LBs. That is pretty much it. Teams that rebuild normally don't suck at every aspect. There are a lot very important spots on this team that are just flat out weak. I got no problem w/ them blowing up the majority of this team from coaches to players......sparing the 3 strengths mentioned for the most part.
