PFF's Free Agency Grade Thus Far...

Recommended Posts

Not that it matters, but no comp picks next draft due to all the FA signings.  Some teams are getting like 4 or 5 extra picks because they can let quality dudes walk for bigger money elsewhere.  They're confident they can replace them cheaper or in the draft. We suck so bad at drafting and free agency signings that there are numerous voids to fill every off season.  So the cycle continues.  I'm used to it by now.

C+ is close but we are two steps away from a B.

They grade us low because we weren't willing to pay Burns top DE/OLB money and traded him. Because of this we were able to spread that cap space out and improve our O-Line, starters and depth, and our Front 7, overall. We addressed where it matters this time, by unit and in the trenches. We remain thin at WR/TE, CB/S, and Clowney(?). There are some good CB/S remaining in FA, snag one of these at a minimal exposure and Clowney and I like were we are good going into the draft. There's not much left at WR/TE in FA that I see would upgrade us much, unless one were emerge through a cut/traded last minute.

I think we will have to go into the season with two mindsets: 1) the O-Line is so much improved that it improves all other aspects of the Offense (likely),  and 2) Mingo, Marshall, Tremble, Johnson, and the 2024 draft pick creates so much of a improvement/competition that a long term answer emerges, outside of AT. Like many of you, if you establish an O-line like we have now and have a former #1 QB draft pick, a WR/TE should elevate to the top out of that group.

To me, a C+ implies there were options we should have pursued instead. It would be informative if the person generating that grade also made suggestions as to what we could have done differently overall to obtain a better grade. If instead, there were no other options, then we maximized our situation and that in turn deserves a higher grade. Perhaps it's expecting too much, however

No, the grade is indicative of did Carolina's actions to make them better. There are numerous scenarios that could have been procured differently via free agent and trades this offseason than what has played out. Did Carolina make their O-line, front 7, receiver core, and secondary better with the pluses and minuses? Losing an all-pro DE/OLB and not replace that is an impact. Also, replacing sub-performorming OL with true performers is an impact. Of course I didn't come up with the C+, although I will not disagree with it at this point in the offseason. For us to move up into the B's, I need a better DE/OLB and a depth signing in secondary to solidify that grade. Our offense is about as good as it is going to get, minus some last-minute signing/trade/cut at a minimal contract exposure, before the draft. Defense could use two legitime pieces, pre-draft.

We always will need to use the Tepper Curve.

A knack for knowing what narrative the owner is dining on will take you far.

I grade this one highly. That’s on The Curve.

Here’s you Tepper Curve: edge, wr. Which is the Same poo as last year. Exactly.The.Same.
