Falcons got Cousins and Penix

Its a slow news cycle just was reading a little about the dynamics of the falcons paying a ton for cousins only to use the 8th overall pick on penix instead of someone to help cousins.  Really makes no sense to lock cousins in long term and not use the 8th pick to get him more help.  Reminded me of something the panthers would do and gave me hope that the falcons are trending down instead of up.

He is a QB, on a rookie deal and Cousins is old coming off an achilles injury.

Which QB they got is the part that is highly debatable if it was good. Yeah they could have used that on more tallent but Cousins doesn't win in the postseason so it wouldn't matter anyways. Chances are good they take the NFCS regardless this year or it goes back to a Bucs team that just breaks .500.

If they screwed it up, it’s one pick. Kind of like if we’d taken Levis maybe, at 9 in 2023. That is their worst case.

Would you rather do that and hit or miss, or what we did?

Well then that begs the question, why sign an old, injured Cousins to a big deal and thus hamper your ability to add talent around a QB on a rookie deal?

This decision reeks of indecisiveness in the FO, and I can't believe it's receiving praise on this website.

It'd be like if we drafted Levis at 9 in 2023 after giving Derek Carr $100 million. Would you honestly be ok with that?

Im still bummed we didnt take Rattler in the 5th round to have on hand in case Bryce busts. I would be willing to bet that he will be one of the steals of the draft.

As far as Penix goes, if Cousins struggles with staying healthy they have a young QB with loads of potential that could come in and potentially be pretty decent if he can develop and prove himself. I dont think they made a bad move at all personally but im no expert and not a GM obviously.

It's almost worse than trading DJ Moore, swapping picks, and giving up a 1st + 2nd round pick for Bryce Young.

If Penix becomes a top 10 type of QB no one will care where he was drafted or that Cousins was already on the team

They invested twice in the most important position. I have seen a ton of you clamoring for some competition for mighty midget.

I hate the falcons, but stop judging their QBs when we have the worst starter in the league until proven otherwise.

If Bryce was a top 10 QB no one would care what we gave up to get him. See? Two can play that game.

So I guess the Falcons get props for the concept of investing in the QB, regardless of how nonsensical the specifics are.

It's almost as if, get this crazy thought, that other teams in the league can also make bad/questionable decisions from time to time. But for some reason, we can't discuss those without every thread turning into the same "Dude did you know that Bryce young is short" pile on from the usual suspects.

Bryce isnt a top 10 QB and looks to never be one, so your argument is irrelevant.

If Penix sucks they look dumb, if he is great they don't look dumb.

They dont get props, but I dont get all the hate especially from our team. It seems more like hoping that Penix will suck and Cousins gets hurt again to me.

"But, but, but, we can't judge the Falcons QB situation because ours is so bad!!!"

We absolutely can, and wouldn't the Bryce move make us qualified to judge a poor QB decision? Lol.

Well we already had one of these threads about this bullshit a while back. Sorry that Bryce sucks and pointing out that fact hurts your feelings.

I wouldnt give a flying fug if he was short but could actually play the position.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
