College Athletes can now be paid directly by schools to play

So what happens when the kid underwhelms relative to his compensation to play college football for Whatever State University?  Can they now be cut/fired, because they're employees more so than student athletes, or will the "their just kids, let them grow" narrative remain?  Business is business, can't have the cake and eat it too.

This was already the case. Athletic scholarships are year to year. If you're deemed to no longer he worth a scholarship it's just not renewed and you're out in your ass. A lot of folks don't realize that.

Ummm... they've been monetizing them for decades. Now they're just forced to actually pay the help.

Slightly off topic but this same type of thing should happen in the business world. Make me king for a day and one of the things I do is make unpaid internships illegal. It's just free labor and it's gatekeeping bullshit. The rich kid's family can afford to keep him up while he works his internship. The poor kid's can't.

If they do get cut/fired ... you can bet you'll get people everywhere saying, "That poor kid!". This whole thing is inane.

These aren't kids. They are working aged, voting and military eligible adults who could be fired just like any non athlete with a job.

I'm not insensitive to the concerns but it is pretty clear cut what it means and it's not pretty from any angle. I don't see college sports popularity improving over time. It's lost all charm

Now you have a Title IX debacle…

The easiest way to get in compliance with title IX has been to eliminate men’s sports.

Contracts will be coming for these athletes soon.

Which should take the elite talent out of the transfer portal assuming school’s sign guys for the duration of their college eligibility. That’s about the only good thing I can think of that might come from this.

If you "break" your "contract" because you want to go "pro" and maybe make more money ... does that void your college contract? Or like in some odd pro sports cases, will a kid still get paid the term of his deal?

Questions like this is why we’ll see a CBA before it’s all said and done.

"Monetizing them directly" means they were already being monetized, just not directly through the educational institutions they attended. Many of these kids grew up poor and because they're good at a sport, they can get 100% free tuition. Everyone knows that people were giving them money, fake jobs, lottie de lottie da. My point is, the purpose of that free sport related education is completly missing the mark. Putting these kids on a pedestal in High School through College, basically giving many a God complex just to line their alumni's and their own pockets is destroying the future of thousands upon thousands families, in addition to selling them false hope of sustained success...

They need to take a look at the State funding a school receives.  If you have a kid at one of these football schools many times all of the money is flowing into athletics and athletic facilities while the regular student dorms are falling apart and many academic buildings are in bad shape, but check out that new and even bigger jumbotron.  If the schools start paying, any state funding going toward their scholarships should be removed.  I don't agree with our tax dollars paying college athletes.  Let that money come from boosters and endorsements.
