33rd Team article: It's time to rethink Bryce Young's expectations

[Bryce] Young projects to be a solid starting-level quarterback at the next level who can lead his team to victory because of his abilities. He shows the poise, leadership, accuracy, and clutch playmaking ability that teams look for in a high-quality quarterback.”

That was the bottom line of the scouting report on Bryce Young coming out of Alabama. It was also nothing like what we saw from the first overall pick who took the field for the Carolina Panthers last season.

Looking back on Young’s rookie season raises two questions: What went wrong, and what can be fixed going forward?

The team has to give Bryce a fair shake but I can’t help but already be looking in to 2025.

My mind is already at the point where we see that we need to move on from bryce in 2025 but tepper pulls the strings where he gets a 3rd year.

His limitations are just too much to overcome over the course of a 10 year career or whatever

Im waiting for this season to pass any judgement as I would like to see Bryce with a competent coach that actually gives a damn and Canales I believe is going to be a very good passionate and driven head coach so let me see what he does this season and then I will pass my judgements on him. He deserves this season to show improvement absolutely. I want improvements to show that he can be a star player and carve up defenses. I realize odds are against him after what we saw last season but he needs this season to be sure of what we have. I mean, the guy could throw deep passes at Alabama and could complete passes against quality defenses so I expect to see that this year being led by a guy who I am fully confident will turn out to be a very solid head coach. If he does not show much improvement this season then I will probably stop believing in him and be looking towards that 2025 draft.

I have very low expectations and pretty much expect that we'll be looking at another QB in 2025.   That said, I will give Bryce the benefit of the doubt and will root hard for him to succeed this year.

I agree and I'm doing my best to have hope.  I actually wanted him, but in the NFL so far he seems the literal opposite of elusive and his physical abilities (or lack thereof) give him such a miniscule margin for error.  We will see though.

Yeah, I don't have anything against him. I thought he was the guy but IMO, he has shown that he is not.

I guess we will see what happens.

    • And that makes you right.
    • Mel Kiper said he would retire if Jimmy Clausen wasn't a successful NFL starter too. Just because the experts make a claim doesnt mean it's true either.  Bryce may be a serviceable QB for someone. Serviceable QBs don't bring you a perennial winner or lead you to the playoffs over and over. Serviceable QBs also dont get 50m plus per year deals which is what a Bryce extension would look like.  The stats show he hasn't been even a serviceable QB in the 3 years he's been here. The eye test shows he hasn't put together 2 franchise QB salary games back to back in 3 years.  Complain all you want about people being negative, but people pointing out that Bryce is held to a different standard than anyone else on the team isn't complaining. It's stating the obvious.
    • We have big bodied WRs and 3 TEs who all have potential and each bring something different to the table. I never saw the need to go out there and try and find a new starting TE.  While it's nice to have a guy like McBride, Bowers, etc, I think a team's better use of the cap is by having TEs on rookie contracts or cheap vets, not having to pay elite TE money.
