I didn't think they would fire Frank either in season but then it got worse. It can always get worse I guess.

That's where I'm at.  Should he be fired that early potentially?  Is Tepper an idiot?  Will we be completely screwed?  I don't know, of course, and probably.  But is it possible?  I would say it certainly is.  Let's not forget who's making the decisions here.

Yeah lets see how he looks week eight, Frank aged more than a sitting president by then. Frank had a 4 year contract and Tepper's 1 positive is his ability to use his money so any of these guys lasting into next season isn't a lock yet (Tillis probably has the best shot and would be Tepper's likely goto next guy which would have to be better than Caldwell). No one on this team or running this team couldn't be ditched in some way next year except the Teppers.

Tepper would probably have to give the next guy a 10 year contract but again it's his money and he has been losing so hard he almost has to because selling a 2nd year on a staff with another year like last year is going to be epically bad in it's own way.

I just find it weird to be so committed to the fallback guys if the reason it was that way is because they had pissed away the 2024 # 1 pick already which isn't the issue in 2025.

Okay of course it is possible but there are pretty substantial differences in the equation. People say infighting/mutiny sunk Reich. That may be a big part of it.

He did not have alignment with his coaches.

Here what I think we are looking at, is a basically independent defensive side of the ball. A lot of autonomy at least.

Canales is focusing on the offense. I don’t see conflicting interests there, he picked all his guys did he not? Simpatico with his GM too.

That eliminates a cited source of dysfunction right there.

Yep it is possible that Tepper self destructs it all in a fit of rage. Again.

Different type of dysfunction. Some of the guys with the knives out last year are in charge this year. These hires were heavily influenced by not having the #1 pick and Bryce at QB as locked in facts. If it goes to poo then it wouldn't have to be a fit of rage but just flushing the Bryce experiment and everything attached to it...which seems like the QB whisperer you brought in that no one else even interviewed is fair game at that point. Lots of money and the #1 pick would change the hiring options but yeah Tepper would get bent over hard for sure in that process.

No idea. I see lots of hope that this is all just a long term rebuild but the fact they didn't bring in a Canales guy at QB to compete while promoting Morgan and 150 million at OG make me guess this is all in on Bryce 2.0. We will see but everything, unfortunately lots of bad, is still on the table as far as possibilities go.

I thought the (point of the) hiring of Canales (or any QB specialist) to run things was that we’d get a professional exploration of Young’s potential, number one.

Secondary considerations would be he has the ability to move forward on a replacement, if necessary, intelligently with a good staff for developing him, on board. Etc etc.

He could, no doubt. But there are still 19 chances for it, and we are not likely to miss the playoffs because Bryce Young missed a couple of series in preseason game 1.

Perspective is good. I would bet if you take the total number of snaps in preseason from last year and compare them to this year, when it is said and done we can see what the numbers are. If he plays the next two weeks it won’t be that much difference, is my guess.

I think preseason reps of important for young players, new systems, new coaches, young coaches….basically we check every box that needs reps.  It’s not even play.  It’s communication.  It’s getting to know people.  You can’t get the same stuff out of practice.

and it sure looks we are down to only 1 legit opportunity to get reps for Bryce and Canales since they passed on last night.   The game to sit folks is game 3.  Bills won’t play their starters game 3.

We will see. I just think that the shift from 4 to 3 preseason games presented an opportunity to re-examine policy on the sequence that was long established and is still carried on. I think largely out of reflex and habit, and without that 4th game it changes things.

I can see where flipping the game where the starters don’t play, to the front of the process, might have some merit.

Maybe that is not what is happening though. To be honest though, my irritation with the plan stems from anxiety over what the offense was going to look like. More than worrying about Bryce Young’s minimal reps that were deleted.

0-17 or 1-16 and he's one and done, but despite my pessimism in thinking this is absolutely an 0-17 team on paper, he should get two seasons at minimum. Let him have a go with his own QB.

I agree there is absolutely nothing that could happen on the field this year that should result in his firing. He’s a first time head coach with a horribly untalented roster. Give him this year to try things out and figure out what works.

I will pass no judgement on canales until year 2.

That's what people are hoping. What they hired is the friend of the GM they promoted to come in and make Tepper's goals work who got zero interviews and is incredibly green. Your scenario is more typical and I could see a functional organization taking that route but that isn't the current Panthers. I think you are way undercutting the typical dysfunction that is apart of these teams since 2019 though. This year hasn't shown me anything to think otherwise yet.

    • The draft isn't a vending machine where you insert a pick, press A3, and out pops a franchise cornerstone. It’s more like a gacha game - you turn in a premium (or non-premium) ticket, hear the fun little jingle, and wait to see what you pulled... without knowing how strong it'll actually end up. League-wide, the average draft hits on about 30 - 40% of its picks when teams have a standard seven selections. So if you walk away with 3 - 4 real contributors... that's considered a solid class. Hitting on 4 out of 11 is right in that range. To be clear: this isn't some veiled endorsement of Tepper, Fitterer, or Rhule. It’s simply an honest accounting of which players from that class are still with the Panthers and heading into their fourth year - and thus outlasting the average NFL career. Just trying to lean more toward more critiquing with clarity, not just lighting it all on fire for the spectacle of the flames.
    • Please do not forget that everything the NFL does is for the increase in revenue. If a big market team draws more money [ticket sales, betting revenue, TV ratings & etc.] when they play at home versus on the road in the playoffs, you can safely be sure the NFL knows & will act accordingly. Just like the draft lottery proposal, if the NFL can capture TV ratings for it, they will.
    • For a WR, 6'4" 220 would be decent size--if you hit the 235 range, I imagine that it costs you speed. I think his speed was an issue. He ran a 4.48 at his pro day. At the combine, he weighed in at 219 (NFL.com).   Mike Evans weighed 225 as a rookie and is also 6'4".  He ran a 4.53 40.  My main and only concern about TMac is between his ears--and it could be nothing.  He seems a bit silly, and it seems that he is in celebration mode when I want him to be in "let's get to work" mode.  Again, some people are just like that, but when they put the helmet on, they get focused.  I want to see that "dawg" before I get overly excited.  The pick is growing on me, and if you broaden the scope to consider what was available in free agency and the draft, it makes sense.  I don't think we got lesser Edge rushers in the second and third rounds, frankly, than what we could have gotten in the first.
