Gettis could have been a dude if not for that ACL tear. Carter was serviceable for a time but he wasn’t the type of guy who would compete with Steve for touches.

Carter had major injury issues.  Plus he was a 5th round pick.  He was 6'3 with really good speed, but his knees were made out of glass.

We never needed anyone to compete with Steve for touches.  We needed someone to force teams to not triple team Steve.

Why can this team not draft a WR? Rae Carruth-TMJ--the history is terrible.  Heck, the best WR in team history was a third rounder drafted to return punts.  Here is what we have done:

Did not Pan Out

  • Rae Carruth
  • Donald Hayes
  • Walter Young
  • Drew Carter
  • Keary Colbert
  • Ryne Robinson
  • Dwayne Jarrett
  • David Gettis
  • Armanti Edwards
  • Kealoha Pilares
  • Joe Adams
  • Kelvin Benjamin
  • Shi Smith
  • Terry Godwin
  • Terrace Marshall

Works in Progress

  • Jonathan Mingo
  • Xavier Legette

Average Success

  • Brandon Lafell (had three 600 yard seasons with Carolina over 4 years here)
  • Curtis Samuel (had 2000 yards in receiving over 4 years here)

Standouts

  • DJ Moore
  • Steve Smith
  • Mushin Muhammad

Actually, the sad part is that I miss the one year wonder guys. poo we haven't had one of those in a while.

Most of those were linked with a qb that could make them one.

AT was sort of that guy last year for us. Would guess his numbers go down a good amount this year.

I made a Walter Young reference the other day haha and looked him up, he was pick number 226. Looked real good in camp and preseason as I recall.

AT doesn't count. He would be more akin to signing Keyshawn Johnson than drafting a rookie.

We had just a crazy run of those rookie guys that would show promise in year one(sometimes two) and then poof.....gone from the league in a flash.

More recently it has just been bust after bust with little to no production at all.

TMJ is one, Mingo has a season to show he isn’t and XL is looking a little shaky to start out.

Was he an 03 or 04 rookie? I feel like smith referred to him(not by name) in his podcast as a guy who’s heart wasn’t in it

    • Well, they're both in the same league (if you will). During preseason, Fitz went 3/3 & Sauls went 5/6, but of course Sauls was 4/4 last night (including one 50+). Both were Lou Groza Award finalists. I believe Fitz made two 55+ yarders last season, while Sauls led the nation with three. Fitz was 13/13 (💯) while Sauls was 21/24 (87.5). Fitz was a 3rd-Team AP All-American, while Sauls was a PFF All-American.  Career-wise, Fitz was 58/74 (78.4), while Sauls was 52/64 (81.3). I wish that I could see the attempts and knew the depth of yardage. I wish that we could compare practice kicks during their training camps, but we can't. Maybe someone with a PFF/CFF account can give that Basically it's just a matter of belief I guess. Seeing dude knock down four FGs and go perfect during a pressure-filled game for him is damned impressive if you ask me. I don't believe that Fitzgerald could do that.  That being said, I'd have to know more. I will say that it may be worth mentioning that we seem to like PFF this year and Sauls being a PFF All-American may be notable. Now that being said, the Panthers may not be even considering Sauls.
    • Ive said it 1000x times on here.  Our 2025 season will be dictated by the first 4 games.  poo the bed there and lose all confidence and momentum, we win 5 games maybe.  Go 2-2, 3-1 we got a look at 7/8 wins
    • I basically made almost the exact predictions on a phone call with a buddy about 3 weeks ago. I really do expect Evero gone before the seasons end, Young to just not able to get over the hump enough and DC to head into next season on a VERY hot seat.
