Canales still believes in Evero

It's possible he "believes" more in Robert Saleh.

At the least, it's a name that must be in his head as a contingency. We're all talking about the possibility of Evero getting fired but he didn't exactly want to stay with us in the first place. That may still be the case now, especially since we kinda ruined his reputation by doing so.

The scheme is inconsistent and ineffective. It doesn't matter who is out there. We sucked when we started the year and haven't improved much in points surrendered which is the only defensive Stat that matters. We give up more points in the last 2 minutes of either half than anyone else. That has to be scheme. I want an aggressive attacking defense whether it be 3-4 or 4-3 or some hybrid. Evero's weak zone bend until you break drives me crazy. I for one won't miss him if he goes.

Josey Jewell is Evero's chosen leader. He's never led a defense to a winning season.

I keep hearing Derrick Brown and Jaycee Horn are good while they've failed to lead a defense to a winning season or a division championship. Fuller and Robinson won a SB. Shaq went to a SB. Clowney went to a conference championship last season. Jackson has helped a defense to the playoffs and this is is his first season starting on a losing team. Woods has won in the playoffs and had multiple winning seasons. Tuttle has been to the playoffs and started on a winning defense. DJ Wonnum has been to the playoffs.

So, the unproven ones on defense are Evero, Jewell, Brown and Horn. All the others have been at least playoff caliber under other DCs. Why is keeping the consistent losers the answer to improving the defense?

This excuse that Evero has defensive starters who drag down a DC is ridiculous. They are proven playoff level talent that can win in the league.

Evero and Jewell need to go. They will never have success in the NFL. Brown and Horn are talent a good DC can use, but they will never be defensive leaders.

Well I agree Evaro needs to go you do know single players on defense don't lead teams to championships.

I mean, yeah, but they knew they were making sacrifices in regards to the defense. With the injury to Brown and to a lesser extent Shaq, we were cooked. Sure, the FO is accountable for trying to ensure (and insure) that the (im)perfect storm doesn't happen, but making lemonade out of lemons is really not realistic in the NFL. Matt Rhule and Scott Fitterer (under pressure from David Tepper) left the roster in shambles from too many angles. Dan Morgan and company concentrated on offense last off-season with a so-so result, but still to the detriment of the defense, including a wing and a prayer at EDGE.

All that being said, I dislike the scheme, especially when you're trying to rebuild (and, yes, we were/are rebuilding regardless of what they say), but, then again, I guess that ripping the band-aid off is a rational approach during a transition. Still, I prefer a 4-3 base (admittedly, maybe because it's what I'm used to). I am highly skeptical of Evero's scheme because to me it makes it easier for the RB to gain a head of scheme, and if you don't have the speedy physical backers and safeties you're cooked. I'd much prefer that Evero goes, but if he stays he'll have a fairer shot to make a believer out of all us non-believers.

You can't completely blame one offseason for all our defensive or overall roster ills. That took multiple people multiple years to achieve. If we didn't know any better, one would assume Tepper was a Saints or Bucs or Falcons superfan with how efficiently he has brought people in to tear down this franchise.

Both players are arguably top 5 in the NFL at their respective positions and have stated multiple times how they wanna be here and how they want this team to win. That sounds like a leader to me.

I am not sure what list you are using but I don't believe very many would consider either of those guys top 5 at their position. They certainly have that potential but neither has been able to maintain that level of play for any real length of time.

    • It will be really interesting to see how both sides handle this. I'm sure the team would love to get him signed to a 4 year deal based on his output so far and some potential factored in, i.e. something like a 4 year $30 million contract.  But I could see his agent telling him the best path is to take the one year offer, put up a big year next year and then really cash in. The team also has to keep in mind T-Mac's 2nd contract, which likely will happen after the 2027 season assuming he keeps improving as expected.  Even if we could get him on a budget 4 year deal for what he could become, the problem then becomes when he wants to re-negotiate in 2 years during the same summer we will extend T-Mac, and you don't want to spend that much on WRs in one offseason, just see the Bengals this last year. Taking everything into consideration, I'm thinking the 1 year deal and then getting him to sign a 4-5 year deal after hopefully say a 800ish yard season next year might be best for our cap situation and separate his and T-Mac's negotiation periods.
    • And yet jax made it no further than we did, and its very possible the Pats don't either. I think it speaks more to the overall down year for the nfl as far as having great/dominant teams, every team this year has fatal flaws that can be exploited
    • Ehhh I agree the nfc is stronger this year but their really werent any truly dominant teams this year everyone is flawed, I think the narrative for the NFL this year will to try ahd force a Josh Allen SB win
