Panthers and Horn talks will be interesting

The best player at any given position is rarely the highest paid. Salary cap goes up annually giving more cash opportunity. New contracts are based on current/future salary cap and active contracts become outdated almost yearly.

I understand how that works, but Surtain was just extended in September. He’s clearly been the highest performing CB from his class.

I like Horn and want him to stay a Panther, but not at $24mil per year.

It's very difficult.  You almost have to sign him despite the injuries and the PI calls.  I don't think we're in a position to lose any more talent.  I mean I'm not confident he won't get injured again but it's a tough position.

The bottom line is that we can't afford to have top 10 paid talent constantly not on the field. So, hopefully we can come to a good agreement for both parties that doesn't make him a top 10 paid guy, as he hasn't played like it consistently enough.

I would even be fine with a short term(2-3 year) pretty incentive laden deal that could allow him to get a mega contract with his next deal.

Plus his value is limited with 0 pass rush.  Mike Jack is would probably look like an all star with a good front 7.

Yeah, I mean there is that. But one has to assume we plan to attempt to fix the pass rush. How long that takes is anyones guess.

He has to be extended. No brainer. But I would likely wait on this one. If he has another injury plagued year, then there's leverage to pay him less. If not, it probably won't have much impact. Unless of course he goes out and makes All Pro. But that's a good thing.

Only so much money to go around.  Invested heavily in the offensive line.  Will likely extend Moton.  Extended Chuba.  We still need weapons on offense.  We still need a front 7 outside of Derrick Brown.  That's just how I see it.  I don't know how it makes sense to use what's left to lock down a guy that put up a similar PFF grade to Mike Jack.  I don't really worship those scores but it does align with what I saw this year.

True but I don't think we will be making big, splash signings on the DL in free agency. It will be much of the same as we have been doing with attempts in the draft to get long term solutions.

    • Jack Roslovic: Only 2 other UFA, right-handed centers age 28 or under had more points (39) than him- Sam Bennett (51) and Pius Suter (46). There were 4 other centers age 33 and older who scored more: Gireaux (37), Marchand (37), Tavares (34), Granlund (33).  Unless the Canes go old, if they let Jack walk, they won't get a center who scored more.  Thoughts?
    • nope     This is why we come back every year.  Hope springs eternal
    • It's important to differentiate criticism and hate. I can't speak for that individual you quoted. But most people who have been critical of the Tepper's have been so because both of them have made it a point to put themselves front and center and in the middle of team operations and we have been largely horrific more often than not as a result. If people are making derogatory remarks about her that should be met with an appropriate response but if people are being defensive just because she's being criticized all I can say is people should get used to it. Both her and David would have been getting absolutely skewered by the media and the fans if this were a big market franchise. The Lakers are finally being sold off after years and years of public criticism of Jeannie Buss and even though I'm the furthest you could go from being a Lakers fan just about anyone you could meet who is familiar with the NBA would say the criticism was certainly valid.
