Is running back on the table for the panthers this draft?

I'm not against RB...but GD, we had thee worst defense in the NFL...like almost ever. I said when we start drafting correctly, 3 years... this is year 2... and we fked it up with Brooks..

We also have to start being intelligent eventually. If the draft is stacked at RB, take a RB. If the draft is stacked at OG, take an OG. If the draft is stacked at EDGE, take an EDGE.

Our issue is that we don't do that. We do what we did with Brooks, we reach in a weak RB draft. We reach in a weak WR draft on XL. We. Reach.

You gotta stop doing that if there is any hope of ever getting good at drafting.

I realize that Skattlebo (sp?) might be a college novelty, but I saw a "dawg" who can catch out of the backfield, block, and I think he even threw a pass.  I think he would be more than depth and become a fan favorite--I think his toughness would be contagious.  I also have not researched the backs, so I could be way off.  I would not be mad to see him taken on day 2.

If he’s available late day 2 (probably not), I’d do it…

You nailed it... It was a weak rb class last year and to take one still recovering for a injury in a weak class was hilariously bad... You threw a second in the toilet. He won't see the field until on the 3rd year of his rookie contract with one year left and we still won't know if he will be healthy.

It seems to be a strategy we use when drafting.  Instead of taking a later guy when a position is deep, we prefer to take an early guy when the position isn't good in the draft.

I'd say its definitely going to be addressed this off-season.

We went into the last draft with a roster of RBs including:

Chubba, Blackshear, and Miles Sanders. We picked Jonathan Brooks in the second and still signed Rashaad Penny afterwards.

Fast forward....One turned into a top 10 back, 1 is injured/out for most if not all the '25 season, 1 retired, 1 will either take a huge paycut or be cut, and the last is a restricted free agent. We brought in Mike Boone as well. Add him to the free agent list also.

We need a physical option.

Which qualifies:

Ashton Jeanty(Boise St): Overall ranked Top 10. Almost 2k yards after contact, 28 tds. Would take our first rounder. My money would be on an NFC East team selecting him. (97.2 PFF run grade) - 121 forced missed tackles.

Omarion Hampton(UNC): Ranked everywhere from 20 - 59 overall. Consensus #2 back after Jeanty. He'll be a second rounder. 1,222 Yards after contact w/ 15 tds.  (90.5 PFF run grade) - 72 forced missed Tackles

Kaleb Johnson(Iowa): Ranked from 38 - 69 depending on which media outlet you prefer but generally #3. 2nd/3rd possibly. 1,060 Yards after contact w/ 21 tds.(86.7 PFF run grade)- 66 forced missed tackles

Cam Skattebo: Ranked from the 50's - 104. Every mock I do he ends up BPA at some point. 969 Yards after contact w/ 17 tds(92 PFF Run Grade). Probably the best receiving back of the group. 81 forced missed tackles.

If the '24 and '25 draft classes were combined, IMO the rankings would be, in order:

Jeanty, Hampton, Brooks, Johnson, Skattebo.

I wouldn't take one high but I'd take one for Chubba and Brooks insurance.

100%.  You have to play the cards that are dealt.  Not the cards you wish were dealt.

I am only gonna put up with one more Fitterer draft from him before I am done with it. He did well in free agency but our future can't be built on overpaying free agents, good choices or not.

Yea...another Brooks move and I yelling. I'll reserve that till I see how many holes he fills in the draft. We all know our needs at this point.

In the 4th or 5th round like the majority of other teams are doing? Sure.

But unfortunately we are also in a predicament where every draft pick this year is crucial.

Not to beat a dead horse but this is really what we should have done last year. Alas...

    • They are 1 and 9 against the  Bucs in the past 10 games. the Panthers go as young goes.  QB1 ‘s are suppose to dictate and overcome  and elevate Everything the QB does affects every part of the team and Bryce is uneven. Canales and Bryce have  an uneven relationship too  as for Evero, the only thing that might save him is the injury to Baker’s left shoulder and oline injuries. I don’t even know how he is out there   I really feel their season ended last Sunday Canales’ division record isn’t great   Getting owned by the Saints and Bucs isn’t a good look
    • Frankly surprised by the amount of people that want to hang Evero. This was a defense that was almost universally considered the bottom of the barrel before this season started. We’ve managed to stat our way to the middle of the pack whatever that means. Those critical of the zone schemes, what do you want? When even JC is getting burnt one on one by Olave you have little choice. There definitely have been moments where the zone blitz stuff has bit us. That said, are the third string linebackers (and nick Scott) covering poo anyway? This unit had only conceded 10 points going into the fourth quarter despite a litany of bullshit penalties on both sides. Them over performing is the biggest reason we are still in playoff contention.
