Smitty's broken arm has been a blessing in disguise...

I actually think it hurts us badly but not how most think....

the biggest questions mark coming into this season is how the DL plays in regards to pressure.....if they can get enough pressure so teams don't pick us apart. Well, if all we have to test the defense is Dwyane Jarrett, LaFell, and Moore.....the defense might not get a true test how effective they are. I mean, you can probably give Jarrett and company more time to run there routes and the secondary still survives and looks effective. No team we play is going to be attacking us with the caliber of WRs our defense is currently seeing. I think not having Smitty hurts the defenses ability to gauge where they are.

The hell?

Our D-line is going up against one of the best O-lines in the leauge, a long with one of the best running backs. If they are getting off O-line blocks then they know they are doing ok, if they are getting beat to the ground then they know they still need work...

there is a huge difference defending and getting to a QB when you have Steve Smith caliber WRs you have to worry about......and then with Jarrett/LaFell caliber only WRs. Gotta get to the QB faster to help the secondary with the likes of Smith. Smitty is now out of the equation and defense simply has an easier task. They can take longer to apply pressure and it won't be as costly. imo.

Defense and secondary also plays differently. Beason has commented on it before. The offense are not the only ones who miss out when Smitty can't go.

I don't see how you can judge the pass rush as it relates to not putting the secondary in a bad spot when the only WRs you have are sub par.

is kenny fast enough to take on the X receiver role?

if so then that would allow smith to fall into the flanker or slot receiver role where it seems he would more like to be.

i do think that unless lafell is a whole lot of fail, moore's best hope is to be the 3rd receiver. lafell just fits the moose role better than anyone (except for maybe jarrett if he gets a clue).

But the Panther's don't have Moose anymore. We don't need someone to play his role, we need someone to play their own role.

ProFootballTalk now reports that insiders at Panthers camp say that Matt Moore is already relegated to the backup spot and many in camp are glad Steve Smith (not the good one) is hurt.

At least he's not gonna punch anyone this time!

PFT is still making stuff up all the time:

RT @ProFootballTalk: Report: Lewis not "entirely on board" with Owens addition ... Just spent 70 minutes with Lewis. I'd heartily disagree.

I guess he meant the role of receiver/blocker. We are still a running team, so whomever gets the number two spot will have to block as well as catch the ball.
this^^^^

we need someone who is a big downfield blocker who can also make the big catch.

now....if we do move kenny into the X position then we could move smith into the slot where he'd rather be. if we are going to have a lot of 3 receiver sets anyway (which it sounds like is going to be the case) then this would make sense.

my question is still....does kenny have the jets to be that downfield threat?

    • Sometimes its fun to read the threads/posts.  The panthers could literally hire a groundskeeper and we'd have a thread "improving the field for no other reason to prop up Bryce Young".  Apparently no move is ever done to actually make the team better.  All a conspiracy to just focus on Bryce Young. Or suddenly daydreaming and reminiscing about Sam Darnold when he was hated more than Bryce Young.  Its really fun to do a message board search about Darnold during that time period.   Or thinking there is just a tree that grows QB, and you can just easily go up and pluck one.
    • Yeah okay. We as an organization have been more patient with him than many. And there has been a small parade of guys drafted since he was, also to bad teams, that have passed him. Some have lapped him. As a fan I am out of patience but he gets this year it is out of my hands always has been. I just hope the bar is higher than it has been for him.    FWIW, XL dropped two passes last year. He did do some other bad stuff, just saying.
    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
