I don't think it's hate. I didn't agree with the size of the deal was the main issue I had. We paid him like he is a pretty good TE, which is a very much not. He is basically a blocking TE, which are a dime a dozen in the NFL.

Yes, certainly if he develops into a pass catching threat the deal looks great but it's been three seasons without much in the way of development there.

I think he just is who he is, an athletic blocking TE.

May be a little high, but Carolina has an out after next season. So it's not really that bad. 5.25M a year for a 2nd contract TE is not horrible. I saw some comparisons to Ian Thomas in another thread and I just don't think that's the case. He gets open alot more than he gets targeted.

With 3 coaches in 3 seasons, I didn't expect much development honestly. Coming out of college, he was always a project receiving tight end that was a very physical blocker. From what I remember, the thought was if he was able to develop his catching and route running, he could just truck people with the ball in his hands because he loves the physical contact. We've just sucked at developing talent for decades. Either guys have it when they get here or they don't.

I compared him to Thomas because of the price tag. Ian Thomas was obviously worse but the fact we kept paying him was fuging infuriating.

Yeah, I mean I get that he might not have had continuity but as a professional you really need to be doing what it takes to improve your overall game if you have the drive to be great. TBH, I sort of just tend to think he is just never going to be more than a lower end receiving threat. It's just not who he is. Which, again, that's fine but just don't pay out the asshole for a blocking TE. Give him a market or market+ rate.

Oh that was you?! I didn't remember who it was. I agree about Ian Thomas. But Ian had the opportunity as TE1 and never took advantage of it. Actually he failed. Never showed anything that led you to believe he could be that guy. Tommy has always been TE2 or the blocking TE, but he's shown more flashes in that role than Ian ever did. Will he ever be a Kittle or Kelce? I don't see that at all. But he can play and if they give him more targets, he'd be worth his price tag.

You know, Thomas just kept fooling everyone in that building somehow. Remember how many times he "flashed in training camp/practice" and then disappeared during the season? It was NUTS.

I don't see ever being okay paying significantly above market value for a blocking TE. They are just too easy to be had for a small price tag. That's just my personal philosophy on the matter. Not the way I like to see cap space utilized.

I don't disagree with doing what you have to do to be great. I guess it all really depends on what he was being asked to do. If he was being asked to be primarily a blocking TE, great. Pay him like one. If he was being asked to become our next Greg Olsen, then there's a lot of work to be done, but he's also got to be used that way regularly on game day. I'm not sure what they asked him to do or become, but that contract has Ian Thomas vibes to me.

Yeah, it just feels like we are competing with ourselves. That's sort of the classic issue with a lot of our bad FO moves.

I definitely feel that way about the Horn contract. Wow. That was so insanely reckless.

Might be a weird answer, but I'd have interest if Canales has interest.

Basically, if Canales thinks he can use a FB, then yea, I'd 100% be interested as he's still got a lot left in the tank.  But if he just doesn't see a big enough role for the position for the offense he wants to run, then it would be a waste of cap space.

Yeah, I think his success at OG will put him well out of that range. But, you are also talking about using him in a way we could likely get a versatile backup in the draft and do similar. Maybe not be the pure freak Becton is but at a reasonable price.

I only want Becton to do it because he is 360 lbs and like 10% body fat somehow. Dude is a literal giant.

    • They've gone way overboard with the masking of plays by only filming the ball in air.  Nobody is analyzing camp highlights.
    • Canales up first. Guys got their legs back yesterday and started a little slow when they came out Bryce challenged them in the huddle and they responded "Dominant practice for the defense today." Praised turnovers, "beautiful hits," and being physical Praised Moehrig, Ransom, Incoom, and Jones II Confirmed playing starters. Predominantly a young team and can't pass up an opportunity. Emphasized game day routines such as nutrition, body readiness, etc. Plus it's a bunch of new guys on the defense. Bryce will start. Will play them the first two, but starters might sit for the third game depending on how practice goes that week. Nic Scourton has a mild hamstring that happened in special teams. DJ Johnson had an issue with his hip flare up and is getting checked out this afternoon. Experimenting with approach to preseason games. In Seattle they played their starters in all but the last preseason game and what Pete Carroll was looking for in terms of mental readiness to play football. Thomas Incoom has been getting a lot of work with AC Carter adding to his toolbelt. Getting better as a rusher and being physical in the run game. Looking for a consistency in response. 1pt for a win, 3pts for a TD. Defense doesn't like that, but in games if they give up one go ball the score can swing. They challenged the pass game and the run game today. Guys are getting together before, between, and after team drills to challenge each other Job of the coaching staff to set the foundation for our schemes, philosophy, and expectations of what it's like to play Panthers football. Powerful when players take that and the locker room owns it. That's when it becomes our team, their team. At the end of the day, the men on the field have to rebound from a bad play, celebrate the good plays, and keep each other in tune for a whole game. Robert Hunt is amazing. Size, talent, quickness, flexibility. Really intelligent guy that there will say himself there are technique things he needs to work on. Regardless of where players are at, there's a constant learning curve and loves that Big Rob is challenging himself with the position coach. Thinks the digital down and distance can be really valuable. Getting the information quickly will help with the flow of the game. Thought TMac looked great but there were some near misses that he'll have to get in the room and communicate with Bryce on while reviewing film. James Mitchell keeps doing right and his trust factor is increasing with the QBs. If you're right and the coverage says the ball goes there, it'll come. Had some issues at the start of camp but is trending up. Newton or Person: "It looked like today was beyond thud but short of live. What do you call that?" Canales: "No, that's thud. In my mind, that's what thud should look like. The challenge for our defensive guys is can you put your body in a position where we know that would've been a tackle." Whizzing by, tagging with two hands, etc doesn't show you whether you would've made a tackle. That's not real football. Let's the play extend because guys have to be ready to chase sometime where the ball squirts out from a pit. Can't train to say "Ah, it was a tackle" and relax but instead play with intensity through the whistle. Lathan Ransom is bringing the physical style of play that they saw on film. Has been really into the details and someone that they can count on. Has really given himself a chance to start at the other safety position. Excited for the extra energy from a game-like environment that they'll get from FanFest. Used to have four preseason games and now FanFest feels like that first one. Will give ST full speed reps to evaluate. Making plays and feeding off of the fans. Window closed quickly on the INT to finish practice. CSW baited Bryce with some movement and made a great play. Saw it from Bryce's perspective with TMac coming open. Has played all over the secondary that they can count on to speak loudly and be on the same page with his teammates.
