New First Round Mock Draft 10/14

No way in hell 5 DEs go in the top 8 and no way in hell the Panthers take a WR in the top 5. Just ain't gonna happen.

I also doubt Robert Quinn goes #5 overall after missing the entire season due to suspension.

No way Bruce Carter is available at #24. He will drop jaws at the Combine. He'll be the first LB taken.

Not saying he will or wont be taken in the top 5, but most draft places still have Quinn as a top 5-10 player on the draft boards.....so it's possible he goes as high as #2/3 or as low as 13th or so, I don't think he will fall much more then that though.

I'm hoping a big time DT comes into the top 3-5 picks as the season ends and the combine heats up. But if AJ Green is the BPA for us (and it is definitely a need), I'd be okay with it. In the past 10 years at the draft, of the WR's taken in the top 5 picks, only Charles Rogers and Peter Warrick have been flops. The other WR's taken in the top 5 have been: Braylon Edwards, Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, & Calvin Johnson. I would looooove to have an Andre Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald on our squad opposite Smitty. I feel like the WR busts are more in the latter part of the top 10 or in the teens. Does that mean that AJ Green is an Andre Johnson rather than a Charles Rogers or Troy Williamson? Nope, but glass half full versus half empty mentality is what it comes down to. We have a few needs that should be addressed with our pick. Peterson or Amukamara could lock down our CB position if necessary. If Marcell Dareus continues to blow up, he would be my preference, but I don't know enough about him to know if he translates into a 4-3 DT more than a 3-4 end. AJ Green looks like a highlight reel waiting to happen, so I wouldn't be mad with him one bit.

Dareus from Bama is more of a DT.

That is who I believe we would draft.

I would rather trade down, which is going to be valuable because their will be a rookie pay scale before these guys are signed. Both players and Owners want a rookie scale, so this is def going to happen.

Does this guy look like a DE, to you?

It's a HUGE risk to use the # 2 overall pick on a WR. Remember the trap Detroit fell into trying to fix their WR problems in the 1st round of the draft?

I'd guess we will take Robert Quinn, need a playmaker on the defensive line.

haha, not saying your wrong, but the last #2 overall pick WR drafted by the Lions was Calvin Johnson.....I would say it's worth the risk.

Some things to think about....

If we end up with a top 3 pick, is it really out of the realm of possibility we draft a QB? If we have a new coach/staff in here, they may want their own guy.

Also, I think drafting a top WR is a good move. This team does NOT develop WR's. Maybe if we get a new staff in here, they will, but drafting that high increases the likelihood that that player will be decent. Not sure we need projects like Lefell or Edwards, or Jarrett, etc.

What I would love, is for Clowny/Gettis/Thomas to step up the second half of the season and prove something. If this happens, and we still have a high round pick, we could trade down and get more picks and still get who we need in the 1st (a DT, seriously).

A new coach is much more likely to bring in a veteran QB that understands the offense he wants to run.

If we're bad at developing WR's (which I'm not sure about yet since we have a new receivers coach for the first time since the beginning of the franchise that helped develop Anquan Boldin) then why would we want to draft another one? Why not use the large amount of cap space we'll have next year (or whenever there is football again) to bring in a veteran WR? Drafting a WR high does not necessarily guarantee a better chance of success, it's very difficult to project how a WR will translate to the NFL.

I do like the idea of trading down from a high pick, but I think Robert Quinn is the real deal and might be too good to pass up, even after sitting for a year and we desperatley need a dynamic pass rusher to replace Peppers.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
