Panthers losing another safety

Recommended Posts

Free agent safety Sam Franklin has agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $1.5 million with the Broncos, according to his agent, Harold Lewis.

Franklin, 29, spent the past five seasons in Carolina.

In 2024, he played 10 games, seeing action on four defensive snaps and 241 on special teams, while making eight tackles.

Franklin has appeared in 74 games in his career, with nine starts. He has played 782 defensive snaps and 1,327 on special teams and has 105 tackles, a sack, five pass breakups and an interception.

I'm actually surprised we didn't resign him to another one year deal, especially considering we only have two safeties on the roster.

But I'm guessing the waiver wire moves last season made this possible... (ie.. Bartholomew, Rhattigan, Evans, etc)

He sucks and better safeties will be cut through camps elsewhere.

He was a team captain for ST last year. I think he's a great gunner and 4 phase guy.

Doesn't have much a role on D, I missed the boat on that. I thought he could develop into a WLB, but he's remained a specialist. Panthers do have terrible development skills, maybe canales can finally change that.

Incorrect. He’s an excellent special teams gunner 17 other teams thought he was pretty good.

Franklin had similar one-year offers from 17 teams per his agent Harold Lewis. Conversations with Darren Rizzi, George Paton helped put Broncos over the top. $1.17m salary plus $167,500 SB all full guarantee. #9sports

I've never seen someone with 17 offers. The remaining question- who will be calling dbrown fat now??

Hopefully Franklin's loss causes the front office to sign a veteran safety. Moehrig, Nick Scott, and Demani Richardson isn't exactly a stellar room.

The safety market is the worst, but great for teams. Teams waive players during and right after the draft, couple good fits may hit the market. Blackmon and Williams came in for visits.

I even think the trade market could be a path too. I am getting somewhat worried, but wait until days after the draft before the panic button is needed.

Heres the thing too, maybe Richardson is ready, that would be a nice surprise. He set some all-time tackles record for rookies, first game he had like 15 or something. He followed it up for more and didn't give up big plays or big mistakes.

    • You joke, but hasn't basically the whole team been in Charlotte this past week together? I'm not one to see the random dumb stuff players put out on social media in the offseason and think it means that's ALL they've been doing and not working on their game.  But it's a little strange that all this is coming out at the same time we're seeing tons of stuff with the team in Charlotte together, even if it's just working out and not even official team OTA's or anything. So he gets a pass from me saying anything now, but if he doesn't show clear improvement this season, it then opens him up to some retroactive criticism for some things.
    • Ha-ha, I bet that went through everyone's mind.  Admittedly I don't read all the comments in a thread before I make a post. Great minds think alike!
    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
