Report: Bobcats shopping Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace

ATLANTA -- The Charlotte Bobcats have apparently seen enough.

With the team mired in a disappointing 9-16 season -- which includes two losses by 30 points or more in the past six days -- management has begun to gauge the trade value of a number of its players, including Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace, two NBA sources confirmed to the Charlotte Observer Thursday.

Coach Larry Brown, following his team's 33-point loss to the Memphis Grizzlies Wednesday, called his players out for an apparent lack of effort.

"I had to get on them at halftime, beg them to play. That's not what I'm supposed to be doing,'' Brown told the Charlotte Observer. "No effort, no teamwork, guys don't run back. They blame it on the referees.''

As a result, Bobcats management is assessing its trade options. The two sources -- both executives with other NBA teams -- spoke on condition of anonymity to the newspaper because of the sensitivity of the subject.

"It would not surprise me at all'' if the Bobcats move one of their top players, one source told the Observer. "I will say I think they're asking for a lot.''

Bobcats general manager Rod Higgins did not immediately return a phone message left by the Observer early Thursday evening.

Trades have been common for the Bobcats since Brown was hired as coach in April 2008. Since then, the Bobcats have made nine trades involving 27 players. The only players who pre-date Brown's arrival are Wallace and center Nazr Mohammed.

This team will be garbage no matter who we bring in. Gerald Wallace is having a down year but he is not the problem. Yeah, he's got a big contract, but the problem is all the other big contracts on the team.

Wallace is the only player with any real value, but I doubt we'll get anyone much better in return.

Brown can complain all he wants to about how the team plays but he consistently limits the minutes of high energy players for guys like Diaw and Jax to play 40 min. Also why isn't Derrick Brown playing? When do you see him not give effort? When does he complain to refs?

this team needs a roster blow-up. I would trade Jackson to Chicago for a first round pick, plus James Johnson. Wallace for a center plus a first rounder.....maybe the Magic would consider moving Gortat for Wallace, but doubtfully

We have got to start drafting better. Building a successful franchise starts with good drafting.

Wallace and Jackson have Value, Might be able to swing something good for Diaw or Nazr....everyone else I don't want to be touched (henderson, Brown, DJ) or they are virtually unmovable (carrol, Diop...)

I think the cats can pull in some young talent to a playoff team for Wallace / Jackson....

Diaw packaged with someone else might be able to pull something decent in...

Start building with the current young guys and those picked up with the trades... have a good draft...

might not be good or a playoff team ... but I bet they would be exciting to watch till they gelled and got more talent on the team.

Thank goodness. Now that everyone knows they are being shopped god luck in getting anything for either of them. Only chance is for a playoff caliber team needing help. Chicago I could see as a trading partner, New Jersey has something like 4 1st rd picks in the next draft, the Thunder for some veteran help...

Why didnt the Cats get Beasley when he was being shopped for nothing?

Unfortunately, we didn't have the cap room to add Beasley. Miami traded him away so that they could sign Bosh/LeBron/Wade and only got a 2nd round pick back for him. The Timberwolves were far enough under the cap that they could just easily take on his salary. This is very similar to what we did when we traded for Jason Richardson.

Good timing, maybe the Bobcats ownership and executives are starting to read the message board. I would say the for biggest pieces of trade bait we have our Jackson, Wallace, Diaw, and Mohammed. With that said, one would think we would like to get some valuable pieces in return. In order to gain the very best in return for their services the Bobcats need to set up a few packages. The most likely in my opinion would be Wallace and Diaw then Jackson and Mohammed. However, I wouldn't count on the Bobcats on throwing names like Eduardo Najera, DeSagana Diop, and Matt Carroll in order to make the trade work on the sole reason of evening up salary's. Kwame Brown, who has been playing well of late may also be a point of interest to some teams, but as far as the young guys like Tyrus Thomas, D.J. Augustin, Shaun Livingston, Derrick Brown, Dominic McGuire, Gerald Henderson, and Sherron Collins; well i do not expect to see them going anywhere.

Now that we have some packages and pieces that we are willing to trade away, what trade partners and players might the Bobcats be targeting? Players that may be on the trade block that the Bobcats may have some interest in Carmelo Anthony (Very unlikely to happen), Brandon Roy, Anthony Randolph, O.J. Mayo, and Rudy Fernandez.

I think you might see the Bobcast join up with NY or NJ to help make that Melo trade work out....

Chicago is a possibility

Few of the middle of the pack playoff teams that want to get a boost and try to make a push in the post season are all possibilities as well.

    • He is a great guy but a horrible reporter. He makes my skin crawl when I hear his name. I heard that babies cry and dogs attack him when he enters a room. Other than that he is a good dude. Now go burn in hades u sum bit.
    • The job just really passed him by. He came up when basically you just needed to get three or four quotes, toss a couple of team provided stats in there, and stretch it out to column length. you got your copy in by 330, out the door by 4, then chill/shmooze the rest of the day. If you were really good you got a book deal. Every now and then you got to write an editorial. The goal of the profession was like Peter King where ostensibly you’re a beat writer for whomever but you get paid to just shoot the poo. now it’s a 24 hour job, you’ve gotta be social media savvy, the pace has increased substantially, you’re expected to produce more than ever, you gotta be able to look through bullshit etc. there’s still risk of industry capture where you just become a mouth piece. Sheena Quick is obviously shameless. I don’t think Newton ever aspired to be more than an inoffensive beat writer, but even that relatively simple role was just more than he was cut out for. its even worse when you’re covering a team that expects the Fourth Estate to act as a PR extension, or considers them on par with buying Twitter bots to promote Bryce. there were over thirty papers that covered the panthers first training camp. In that environment there’s room for boring guys like newton, and they may even be incentivized to push the boundary a little. But today that just isn’t the case and most of the guys are hanging on until retirement (person, gantt) or they’re good and gonna be matched up like Jordan. im not defending the current state of sports journalism, just saying that what counts as a meat and potatoes beat writer passed newton by. He’s retiring well past his sell by date, but that’s pretty common for his generation in general.
