Who are the offensive linemen we should draft?

not sure we should. we should be looking at FA for RGs (which is the biggest need on the oline) and depth. lots of good choices there who will be all ready to go. OG isn't really something i am interested in developing. just do what we did a few years ago and pick up a bunch of them and let it shake out in TC.

Dunno if he'd be available in the 3rd for us, he's the top Guard listed, but only a grade of 83:

Orlando Franklin

Offensive Guard

83

* Miami (FL)School

* ACC - CoastalConference

* 6'6⅜"Height

* 318 lbsWeight

* 49Overall Rank

* 1Positional Rank

Overall Football Traits

Production 1 2007: (12/3) Played in all 12 games as a true freshman. 2008: (13/11) All 11 starts at left guard. 2009: (12/12) Started 11 games at left guard and one game at left tackle.

Height-Weight-Speed 2 Is tall with good bulk. Appears on tape to be relatively well-proportioned. Also shows good mobility for his size when running in space.

Durability 1 Has played in all 37 games, including 26 starts, during first three seasons at Miami.

Intangibles 2 Moved from Canada to Florida as a junior in high school, and is originally from Jamaica. Hard worker with passion for the game. No off-the-field issues to our knowledge.

Offensive Guard Specific Traits

Pass Protection 2 Held up relatively well at LT in his only game started (vs. USF in 2009) but the vast majority of experience thus far is at LG. Moves well on the run but does not have elite quickness in set or lateral agility. Struggles a bit when he has to mirror-and-slide in space but overall he is an effective pass blocker. He plays with balance and is a natural knee-bender. Uses a powerful punch to consistently jar defenders initially. Moves his feet after initial contact and can sink his hips. Not as much sand in the rear as expected for his size but he stays low, fights hard and generally has enough strength to anchor.

Run Blocking 1 Good first-step quickness, takes solid angles and generally is in position. Has very good size, stays low, shows good initial pop, and does a solid job of driving his legs after initial contact. He could improve his lower-body strength but still is a very good run blocker who wins almost all of his phone-booth matchups. He absolutely dominated UNC DT Marvin Austin (Scouts Inc. No. 13 overall prospect) at the point of attack on a few running downs in 2009.

Awareness 2 Good overall awareness. Keeps head on a swivel. Knows his assignments. Consistently picks up blitzes and twists. Peels off inside help to pick up delayed blitzes or to give extra help elsewhere. Does a nice job of chipping en route to second-level blocks in run game.

Toughness 1 High-effort player. Fights through the whistle. Looks to bury his assignment. Very competitive. Consistently working down the field as a second-level blocker on longer runs, looking for someone to hit. Also will sell out looking to make the hit after an interception.

Gross, Wharton, Kalil, Schwartz, and Otah, if healthy, will prove to be a very good line.

Bernadeau can play well at LG only, but at RG he was terrible. I'm not sure why.

Robinson is a bad pick so far at this point. Who knows whether he starts taking the game seriously or not.

C.J. Davis is nothing special.

Williams is a serviceable backup, that's it. Chris Morris is the same, he can play well enough in relief. So we have backups at Tackle and Center.

So it looks like we need a guard and a tackle, but our starters are set. I really don't see us going for the offensive line on the first day unless Otah's shoulder causes him to miss as much time as his knee did.

We'll probably take some Tackles that project to Guard in the 7th and hope we get another Schwartz out of one of them.

I don't think it's so much of Bernadeau is terrible on the right side, but mostly his pass blocking. It was seen much easier on the right side earlier in the year especially with Jeff to his right. People were able to stack that side more and rush on the right side compared to having Wharton and Gross on the left.

I'm in the boat if you see a steal with tackle or guard in the 3rd round (or 2nd if we a draft pick from a trade somewhere) that we invest it there. We have depth, but not depth that I want to see starting for the next 5-8 years. Gross is still our big name Tackle but we need to develop some depth behind him so when he goes we aren't stuck doing this again. Same goes to Otah, expect he can't stay healthy for a full season yet. Why invest in a RT that can't stay healthy.

    • Looking like it might be game 7 for Pitt and Phi. Philly is spent. I like more rest for the canes
    • Moton is the man through and through. 2 things I'll always give Gettleman credit for, 1 is drafting Moton, the other is building a SB contending roster and blowing it up in one off-season
    • Kurb is still alive and well.  I’m still friends with him on all of the social media.  He truly is a great man!  That’s my bro!  He always looked out for me since the early days of the huddle.  It definitely makes me sad that he just quit posting here, but that’s life.  He still shares his takes on social media and X, but a lot of the huddle vets just grew tired of this format and the environment, I guess?  It’s a lot of guys that were valuable contributors here that just stopped posting but are still alive and passionate Panthers fans.  Blindsite used to post huge write-ups and was a well-respected poster and then just disappeared.  We had one of these type threads several years ago and he checked back in and explained he just lost the motivation to stay active here.  It was amazing hearing from him again…   I signed up in 04 after coming over from the Charlotte.com boards and been here ever since.  (For those that don’t know - this is Proudiddy - had to change the name very recently due to ‘ol tootsie roll penis and the bad press 😂).  I’m forever thankful for all of you, even those who I haven’t had the greatest history with, I still appreciate yall.  Many have come and gone, both figuratively and literally, and that has put a lot into perspective over the years.  I went from a young, newly married, wide-eyed twenty year-old guy with a baby on the way, to a now forty-two year-old guy, recently divorced and newly re-married guy with my oldest baby now an adult and 5 more kids since.  And what ride it has been!  You guys have been a much bigger part of my life than I really care to acknowledge.😂
