Halftime Observations

I went into this game with complete unbiased, hoping to see something from cam newton that would show me either one way or another that he is deserving of the 1st pick or not.

First half being over, here are my observations:

Nick Fairley- He's looked ok. nothing too spectacular. on the plays i've seen him make, He has been untouched so I can't gauge him just yet.

Newton- the huddle's defacto savior, has been anything but from what I have seen thus far. I really don't see why you guys are all on his nuts from this first half of football. his two touchdown plays were on broken coverages on his first reads. they took no effort at all, all he had to do was toss it that way. if his first option isn't open, he looks to run. his field vision is pretty poor from a QB standpoint. he missed a wide open FB, but i think that's more of one of those plays that everyone fugs up on every once in a while. i won't read into that one too much.

His lack of making reads and his first option not open try and scramble take on the passing game does not seem like it will work in the NFL. I am not impressed. There is still a whole other half of football to play, but from what i've seen, I do not want him.

Fairly is a force...Newton...no words...I mean jeez...to think people want him at #1 baffles me

He has absolutely no enthusiasm on the field either, one of the main things people rip on Clausen for. He looks to the sideline, nods & that's about it. I'd take him in the 5th round

I haven't been impressed with either of them...fairley especially. I've seen newton play better but we are talking about the first pick gentlemen, you don't pick guys with question marks. I feel like we have to pick Green or trade back. We desperately need some defensive tackles but I think green is the closest thing to a cant miss prospect this year. We should lock him up and try to fill our holes through free agency and late draft picks.

How awesome would it be to have a second round pick...thanks Hurney, hopefully Rivera can set them straight.

Newton is incredibly strong, especially in the lower body, but unfortunately for him, his mechanics are slow, his reads are mediocre at best, and you can see on his face he has a cockier attitude than Vince Young now or Michael Vick in his Falcon days. And Vince Young is certainly the best comparison. Cam is bigger and much stronger, but his arm is actually a drop off slightly from Young's.

Fairley has a very quick first step and adjusts to a play very well. He's strong at the point of attack but doesn't get much push, only seems to hold his ground. I think he could be successful in a one-gap scheme where his speed can be utilized. Kind of reminds me of Warren Sapp in the way he plays.

I think people just wanted a franchise QB so bad, they didn't care if it was Newton, Gabbert, or the mailman. Yet it's smart to be patient in times like these. The best plan of action is to sign a FA QB, trade with another team's first next year, and hope that team is the worst next season. That way we will once again be in a position to draft Luck. If we don't get Luck, then we will go from there.

    • see we are just not going to agree - unless you change your mind lol. Mine isn’t changing without hard evidence that Morgan supported it like a puppy dog.  He was the assistant. If he disagreed and said so, and they didn’t listen, he has to pick his battles. If he continued to oppose he is looking for work. He knows this stuff. I think he knows Bryce is a super long shot just because he faced NFL QBs and probably would have salivated at the thought of Bryce on the other side in his playing days.  Anyway I am going to judge him on what he has done since he’s been the man with the title.  I also would bet a stack that there were conditions placed on him and on Canales re Bryce Young. Can’t prove it. I am not supporting the Brooks pick, and rationalizing the XL pick. And rationalizing the Brooks pick to an extent, on the (assumed by me) mandate that was a condition of the hiring. Which was ‘sell out’ to make Bryce work. This year. Now. (2024) That is what those top two picks were.  IMO. They failed, id judged today.  I think Morgan is doing a great job really, once he got his feet under him and was allowed to do his job.  Fixing this team while accommodating Tepper/Bryce, more than a two year fix.    Anyhow I have beer to drink will check back later.
    • Dolphins pass rushers Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips: The Dolphins have received trade interest for both players, but could have an easier time trading Matthew Judon due to his more affordable contract
    • Saints WRs Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed: While the Saints have maintained they don't want to trade their wide receivers, other teams are still monitoring their availability.
