Clowney released

I expected this to ultimately happen but I'm surprised it happened prior to at least rookie mini camp. I figured we'd want to at least get eyes on our new rookies before making the move. I honestly expected it to waiting until final roster cuts.

I dont think he was moving the needle either way but without knowing the details its a curious move.  And I wonder if there was any trade for draft comp on the table?

He got cut so that answers that question. If there was any offer on the table we would've taken it versus cutting him.

Jadeveon was forced to play way too many snaps due out lack of depth last season but had a nice season and at times was out only true pass rush threat

At 32 he’s not part of the Panthers long term vision and that cap space is more valuable to the team than he is

From the article:

Clowney was one of several transactions the Panthers made on Thursday. The club also placed Jonathon Brooks on the physically unable to perform list. The running back tore his ACL during Week 14 last season. By placing the second year back on PUP now, he will be out for the 2025 season. The move allows him time to get healthy after his second such tear in as many years.

Basketball to tight end convert Colin Granger was waived with an injury settlement. The club also made the following moves:

Waived (injured prior to 53) defensive tackle Popo Aumavae, released tight end Jordan Matthews, and waived receiver T.J. Luther, receiver Dax Milne, offensive lineman Andrew Raym and defensive tackle Jerrod Clark.

The roster currently sits at 62 players. The releases come ahead of rookie minicamp, the arrival of eight drafted rookies and a slew of undrafted rookie free agents who will all have to be signed.

    • Biiiiiig eyeroll on this.  First, Look at historical stats of the most recent historical great DBs.  I plucked 3, Revis, Sherman, and Norman (cuzz he was our guy).  Combined post age 30, there are TWO pro bowls between those 3 and wanna get this...ZERO seasons with 16 games started.  ALL missed time.  It is RARE that Corners survive that long in the NFL and its about time we started recognizing this fact.  Jaycee is a good bet because it hasnt been anything seriously devastating injury wise, and with his sample size he could and should be an incredible piece for the panthers through age 30. Jaire kinda flops on the other side, hes 28...so hes under 30, but he wants his payday before it comes up, hes also been injury prone lately.  Bulk of the contract will be on opposite side of 30.  Will both of these guys help us be better in 2026?  SURE!  No doubt, but the question is, will these guys help us past 2026...not sure. The investment isnt worth the risk, nor would the ROI be anywhere close to worth it.  Neither guy is moving us from a 6-8 win team to a 8-10 team, period. My point is we're in this state a 6-8 win team IMO and he projects us as  a 4-6 win team.  EVEN if we think Jaire or Ramsey will make us a 6-8 win team, it in NO WAY is worth the money or capital to move that much just to suck kinda less.
    • I assumed he was retiring but apparently he plans on playing multiple more seasons.  Florida is gonna have trouble holding onto everyone.  Happens to all teams that have that much success.
    • I hate Marchand, but if he became a free agent.....
