They need to address CB before season starts. This is not going to cut it.

I think they are holding back to see what they have in the young guys, but I think it's a near certainty at some point they will bring someone else in.

Right now (assuming we keep 5 CBs which is normal), the top 5 IMO are:

1) Jaycee Horn

2) Mike Jackson

3) Chau Smith-Wade

4) Shemar Bartholomew

5) Akayleb Evans

Obviously Jaycee is the alpha in that room and paid as such. Need him to stay healthy and continue to play at a Pro-Bowl level.

Mike Jack did pretty well all things considered last year, and they gave him lower-level starter money. Fair deal for both sides.

Smith-Wade showed some promise as a slot CB. I think low-key he's a lock for the team. Different size and skill set than the other CBs.

Shemar Bartholomew was the most sought after waiver claim last preseason. Was 5th CB most and inactive most of last year. Had a few defensive and ST snaps. Nothing of note good or bad but too small a sample size to make any judgment.

Akayleb Evans was a 2022 4th Rounder for the Vikings. Has started 19 games (including Week 18 for the Panthers) in his career and played in 43. Was pretty good in 2023 before getting injured and falling down the depth chart last year.

There's some other guys on the outside looking in, but until they show more in training camp I dont see anyway they make the 53.

And only Jaycee, Mike Jack, and Smith-Wade are locks to make this roster IMO.

If we are going to make a move at CB it will probably be around the time teams are cutting down to 53. That's when we will likely sign someone. After all, it wasn't until the end of August when we acquired Mike Jackson last year. I'd be on the lookout for a similar move especially if there's an injury.

if Jaycee gets hurt we are screwed.  I know the board thinks we are another year away, but I think we're closer, and I'd love to get a FA corner.

Constantly losing destroys a teams confidence and desire.  Winning helps build the team...the lockerroom gets confidence, and energy breeds off that.  I think the team will develop more as a unit when we win more.  And that will move us forward exponentially.

The Saints comment after we beat them the second time last year...."that's not the same team we played earlier in the season" is true.  The players bought into Canales, even those who went through the Rhule bullshit.  We just missed out on beating the defending Super Bowl champs last year.  Our WR and RB rooms are stacked.  Our big problem was the DL and we certainly addressed that this year.

Go ahead and build on defensive depth, get another CB.  Let's go for a winning record this year, it will help build our culture.  Finally a new culture.  It's been missing since Riverboat.

Bravo!

I certainly don't know how guys think that we're going to "stink" this year. I'm not saying that we won't, but the DBs were ranked in the low 20s as a unit (according to Chat), so I don't easily see us getting any worse; we should be better. The D-line improvement should help the backfield out a lot, and Jackson and Horn know what they're doing. The older vets we acquired shouldn't take too long to make their presence felt, and we have a couple of promising youngsters in Smith-Wade and Ransom. How do we not make at least a  slight to modest improvement from last year?

The Running back group imo, should be very good.

Oline is probably the best we have had since the roided up first SB run.

Wide Receiver group is interesting.

Main questions on offense are can Young continue to play as he did in the last 6 or so games.  And how good are the TE's.

On defense, its a little more suspect, but we certainly could be  better than last year.

I was going to post something very similar, BUT I expect our front 7 on D to make a jump similar to the one our o-line made last year.

1. Brown is back after missing all of last year. In 2023 he was 1 of the best at his position.

2. Wharton and BB3 are solid players who are NFL caliber starters.

3. Jones is very good pick up; 26 yo and coming off a 7 sack season. Add to that we spent 2 high draft picks on Scourton & Umanmielen. Unproven in the NFL, but the our staff felt good enough about them to cut Clowney who was our best OLB last year (sadly).

We SHOULD be better overall than last year. I would say this is still, on paper, firmly a bottom 5 roster in the NFL.

I definitely hope that improves over the course of the season.

We were not botton 5 last year imo. The oline was to good to be bottom 5. Maybe bottom ten.

Defense is overall bottom 5 without a doubt.  We literally do no have any depth on any position for the defense.  We are once again a couple of injuries away from being complete garbage again.   I assume next draft will be defense heavy.

I really don't think it's that debatable. New England had some argument but our roster was far worse, IMO.

Then we had some impressive coaches to finish 8th from worst plus all of our injuries.  Titans and Raiders were pretty bad as well.

    • This is why they'll lose. The draft pick value is substantial vs. minimal cap impact.
    • You keep mentioning the impact on the salary cap, but that's literally not the point with all these 2nd Rounders, it's all about precedent and it being a slippery slope that would lead to more fully guaranteed contracts for veterans. That's what the teams are making sure this doesn't get to, because yes, you're right, the guarantees for a 2nd rounder won't have significant cap implications if the player doesn't work out.  But you give that fully guaranteed 3-4 year contract to a FA who then shits the bed in year 1 and never regains the form that got them the contract, then yes, it's going to screw up your cap management and won't be a rounding error. And you can say it's a big leap to go from guaranteeing a 2nd round pick's contract to a big FA signing, but it's really not.  Once teams start giving them out, it's only going to keep growing and be insisted upon by agents in other situations and once the ball starts rolling down the hill, it's going to be impossible to stop it's momentum. Also, the only reason a 2nd rounder's contract would be a rounding error, is explicitly because contracts aren't guaranteed and teams can finagle the cap hits with various tactics.  Once contracts become more and more guaranteed, that won't be as easy to do, if even possible at all, and those individual rounding errors become serious problems in totality.
    • Yep!  Jake wanted to stay. It’s been reported a lot that he did. Tulsky waited too long to give him that contract.
