Hell, his agent can't allow it looking out for his own interests. If Stewart was willing to sign a deal wildly out of step with the norm on a bad way his agent would probably tell him he's got a walk. If I want to sign future 1st round draft prospects I can't be a part of this.

This 1000%.  Hey who wants to sign with the guy that couldn't even get his client the guaranteed contract of a 3rd round pick?  Lmao

They sort of drafted him in case they couldn't reach a deal with Trey Hendrickson. Maybe they are close with Hendrickson. I think the A&M defensive scheme may have hurt Scourton and Stewart's sack numbers but at least Nic had four; Stewart had 1.5.  If we hadn't drafted two edge rushers, i would be in favor of exploring a trade for the guy.

Here something else to consider. We're already heavily reliant on rookies at EDGE rusher with two 2nd round rookies on the roster. If you add a third that's going to be three rookies on that unit and you're going to have to bounce a vet. That scenario had Wonnum included in the trade along with a 2nd and a 4th. Three rookies on one unit just seems like a bad idea. Rookies need a lot of coaching and development and you're going to be stretching that thing while also requiring them to play a lot of snaps.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to go into the season with 3 rookies and Jones, who hasn't ever been a "starter" before. Getting rid of DJ is deal breaker for me.

Our FO didn't give DJ Johnson a hard time for being a bad pick.

THAT'S the trade! DJ for Shemar even-steven. I'll guarantee his full rookie contract, then let him vie for a backup role. He can only poison the locker room so much from the bench. If he becomes a beast...we win big.

Not that they would agree to this, but it's about what I'm willing to give up for a cancerous turd.

For some reason I thought he fell.  Sheesh I was way off.

That's what makes this so absurd, 1st round contract SHOULD be fully guaranteed! The Bengals are the bad guys here. If they didn't want to guarantee is contract, don't pick him in the 1st!!!

Lol there's two 2nd round picks this year that got fully guarantees.

Drafting a project that high then trying to  downplay him is peak Bengals. And I'm a guy who liked Stewart more than most.

I think he was too much of a gamble for us at 8, or even them at 17. BUT, that doesn't matter. They took that gamble but don't want to ante up! Fug that! Nothing like pissing off you 1st round pick before he ever even suits up for practice, they're being idiots.

Bengals are a notoriously cheap franchise.

When they were pursuing Tony Siragusa as a free agent, they provided him with a coach plane ticket.

Players were responsible for their own soap and toiletry items. None would be provided by the team.

They are content to underpay their best defensive player with what amounts to a short term prove it type deal.

The offset language at issue in the contract has not been included in their previous contracts, so it certainly sounds like buyer remorse.

    • Sure it does, maybe not every position and not every draft.  You have to admit the hit rate goes down the further in the draft you get.  Would you more readily find a generational talent at the #2 pick or #19 pick?  High picks are considered "busts" if they doesn't pan out, whereas guys drafted later don't have that level of scrutiny upon them.  Different expectation levels.  If Styles does indeed go #2, I already listed the rarefied air that he would be in.  Maybe he doesn't set the League on fire, but my gut feeling is he does.  Again, you don't take an off-ball LB #2 if he is just a 'really good' player.
    • To illustrate my point, I watched (and commented on the Huddle) that Rozeboom would often wait a full second (or close to it) before taking his first step.  I assume that he probably had issues with false steps, a faulty practice that can take an ILB out of the gap completely.  Watch Luke and you see a step with the snap, and rarely was it a false step.  Rozeboom may have had 100 tackles (speculating) but initial contact was 2-3 yards on the defensive side of the ball.  Luke's 100 tackles were made 1-2 yards from the LOS.  Over the course of a year, Luke was much more productive (more fumbles, fewer long gainers, more OL penalties, fewer first downs, etc) that Rozeboom, but on the stat sheet, they both had 100 tackles.  In fact, Rozeboom's inefficiency kept him on the field more (more first downs, fewer OL penalties, turnovers, and punts) so he should have MORE tackles.   I would like to see stats that break down those things.   For example again, Josh Norman was slow--4.68 or so at CB.  However, his anticipation speed was incredible.  He made as many plays as a 4.4 CB.  I had one coach (college--later became the head coach at WCU) tell me that slower players have to use their brains more to still be around.  Elite athletes can just get by on their physical superiority.  He added, "Rarely does a football player run full speed.  Most of the time, they are not, so the 40 time is misleading stat.  Smart players overcome shortcomings--when the elite athlete becomes average (slows with age, advances in level of competition) they struggle against smarter (football IQ) competition.
    • Obviously tongue in cheek hyperbole. But we do not need a first round RB to compete for a championship. We need intelligent roster building. That to me is the complete opposite of intelligent roster building because it is a prime resource at a devalued plug and play position when we have needs across the defense.
