Bam Martin-Scott: Most likely UDFA to stick?

Dean Jones of Cat Crave does provide a relatively lot of Panthers content. Granted, some of it seems like forced filler with a "clickbaity" title, but he provides food for thought sometimes. Now he's saying, "Panthers may have found their Josey Jewell replacement without even trying."

Of course, I don't think that teams do any acquisitions without trying; team building is about detail. That aside, Jones referred to an article by Bleacher Report's Brett Sobleski, an NFL analyst that suggests that Martin-Scott has a legit shot at making the team due to the Panthers' quality and lack of depth at the LB position.

"An upward trajectory is what every NFL team is looking for when it comes to a young player entering the professional ranks. Carolina Panthers linebacker Bam Martin-Scott fits the bill. He is an aggressive defender with a quick trigger, and he's going to deliver a blow upon contact. Those traits can also take him out of position. Still, he has "admirers" among the Panthers' coaching staff, according to Darin Gantt of the team's official site. The Panthers aren't particularly deep or good at linebacker, which opens a pathway for anyone to secure a spot."

 

Now I don't know how good we'll be. As a Panthers fan, admittedly, I think that we're going to be better, but I think the play of Trevin Wallace will go a long way towards making or breaking the room as a whole. I'd also add that Christian Rozeboom is coming off his best season (and can hopefully be somewhere in the vicinity of Jewell in terms of play). But we're not necessarily either good or deep at the position on paper, and like Dean Jones thinks, I expect us to add an experienced vet. But I'd like to ask the opinions of the Huddle, of which many are South Carolina fans, does Martin-Scott have a realistic chance of being a replacement level LB, much less a legit NFL starter. You've seen him play, so what's the deal? He has his "admirers" among the the coaches, but is it really warranted, and if so how much?

I think they just find guys that are most likely to get opportunities and it is an easy pick here with how our linebacker room looks right now.

Where are all the, uh, "USC" fans at? I know its South Carolina, but I've seen their fans in here on the regular. What do y'all have to say? That's really why I started the thread: for the perspective of someone who is really familiar with the kid.

His only shot right now is on special teams. If he makes the roster it will be there. Where he goes from there is up to him.

Fits the mold of downhill thumper. You want to ideally have a guy that doesn’t get washed out vs the run and the other guy to have range vs the run and pass for your setup at ILB. We’ve had neither for some time.

Besides Ryan Fitzgerald, Luke Kandra most likely will stick IMO. As far as other UDFAs, I think Nomura had a more impressive collegiate career than Bam so who knows?

He stood out at times at Carolina, but he never struck me as an NFL linebacker. I’m pulling for him though. Would be great for him and the Panthers if he sticks.

Tavareon “Bam” Martin-Scott picked up his nickname because of the fireworks celebration he typically receives to celebrate his birthday. He grew up playing pee wee football in Fort Wayne, Ind., but developed late and was mostly a part-time player until his senior year at Snider High (alma mater of Jessie Bates). He posted 87 tackles and 6.0 sacks as a senior in 2018, but it wasn’t enough to put him on the recruiting radar. A no-star recruit, he played two seasons with Dodge City (Kan.) Community College and then received several SEC offers. His playing time and production gradually increased each season for the Gamecocks, and he put intriguing flashes on film.

Martin-Scott is a good-sized athlete, with pursuit speed to match races to the perimeter. He competes with a banger mentality to pinball off blocks and stay determined on his path to the ball. Overall, Martin-Scott freelances a tad too much with inconsistent steps in coverage, but he is a classic run-and-hit linebacker who likes to play loose and chase plays — necessary ingredients for NFL special teams.

I have never seen this cat play a single snap of football, BUT, I really hope that we're not counting on a 25 yo, UDFA who played 6 years of college ball to suddenly replace our starting LB. 

Sounds to me like Dean Jones needed a story and didn't have anything else to write about. Wishing the guy luck though, cool nickname.

There's always training camp hype trains. Not just here, but everywhere across the league. A guy will have a good day or two and some people will act like that is going to translate into a major role then the guy gets released a couple weeks later and they're shocked and appalled. Happens every year with every team.

I mean, why make it more than it is? Jones just tries to produce content, whatever it is, and the article is based on another's opinion about UDFAs who have the best shot at making the NFL for each team (and we see these types of articles every year). I don't think anyone is necessarily trying to hype Bam Martin-Scott. In fact, I'd gather that most NFL types, including these writers, would bet that we add a starter-level LB before the regular season. In the meantime, we'll have to wait and see what happens.
