The issues with XL go way beyond just drops. He is lacking in almost every area. That's ultimately the problem. It's not one thing to clean up, it's several.

Hence why he needs to be working triple time on all of it.

This season will show if that is happening.

well, my position hasn't changed since right before we drafted XL.  It only made sense if you were moving away from BY and going all in on what Seattle and Tampa did in the pass game.  If they weren't, you needed a different type of WR in that draft.

The last round of conference expansions effectively killed my interest in college sports outside of evaluating players for the pros. The TV contracts have destroyed anything watchable about them.

College football was 1A for me with NFL 1b up until about 3ish years ago.  The expansion and NIL transfer poo has totally destroyed my interest in the game

Yeah, the open free agency every year is just ridiculous. Tough to be a fan when there's such a massive churn to the roster every year and you're looking at the field like "who the fug are these people???". Basketball is even worse to be honest.

Why do you suggest that both things have to be true? Why do you assume that Seattle and Tampa's passing attack isn't something Bryce can do? His style and passing ability are similar to both Russell Wilson and Baker Mayfield.

Agree to disagree. Dalton is a significantly different type of QB and he didn't play dramatically better than he did for either version of Bryce that he had.

We will see what the future holds. I can promise this, however, if he doesn't pan out here, he will also not pan out elsewhere. Same as Mingo, TMJ, and all the other Panther WR busts before.

Both those guys are far better athletes and have far stronger arms.

IMO, it's about 90% conference expansion and 10% NIL/transfer portal.

It's mostly the old heads that complain about the latter. I get the thought process but I don't believe that is the real issue at all.

Either way, I will come back when college sports collapses and retracts. I expect that will be inside 20 years.

I mean if you have been here for any length of time you have had more than one lightspeed bad take recorded in the annals of Huddle history.

I infamously said that Cam Newton would be, "The worst decision in franchise history." This was largely buoyed on my blind hatred of that Auburn team.

I also said that D. Brown was a bust in the offseason leading up to his 100+ tackle year. Another whiff.

Now I have had plenty of spot on takes, as well. I can say that for draft evaluations, I am definitely more successful in the past few years than our franchise, which is a sad state of affairs.

Sure, but there are bad takes, and there was how hard I banged that T-Mac drum during the whole season and kept it up all offseason until the draft.

Yep, as someone who's favorite team to follow is Arizona Basketball, the Portal and NIL have completely ruined the college game, it's unrecognizable.

A player learning from the bench for a year to then get increased minutes the following 3 until they're a fan favorite senior just isn't a thing anymore and it's just depressing.

It's getting frustrating to have to root for almost an entirely new team every season, they really need to tweak the Portal so you can't just have unlimited transfers without sitting out anymore.  If you fix that to the old system or even just allowing one free transfer, it would go a long way.

I mean, there are old threads that go into the deep bomb foundation of Wilson in Seattle, Geno's comeback and Baker's success in Tampa.  All kinds of old statistical dives into the deep ball for those QBs and their success.  The chunk ball downfield is the common denominator of all that.  League leading stuff.  Bunch of old deep dives on that when we hired Dave.

Bryce runs much closer to being the polar opposite of what those guys found success doing w/ their arm and style. I mean, Bryce is nothing like Wilson the passer . You could find some comparison in wiggle and extending plays but not what they do with the ball and their passing style.

Russell Wilson was only a comp in the fact they were short, got some creative wiggle to extend plays and stuff.    Baker got that too to a lesser degree.   Those QBs aren't comps in terms of the actual pass games or mindsets.

Heck, Russell spent most of his career w/ a gigantic rabbits foot up his rear end.  Wilson was a huge gambler and LOVED the deep ball downfield.    Even washed Russ loves his moon ball.

Yes but it is far, far, FAR better for the players.

Wilson and Baker are WAAAAAY more mobile than Bryce. He has some limited mobility but both those guys(especially Wilson) create those opportunities by scrambling around and getting guys open.

Donovan McNabb, same thing.

Bryce is nowhere near that kind of player.

Yeah, and the one thing both Russ and Baker have without a doubt is arm strength and the ability to throw the ball deep.  It’s why the more I watched Bryce in college and the hype started falling off of him, you’re able to see he really just distributed the ball to insane playmakers.  He didn’t wow you with throws, but he could with scrambles and extending plays - but in the NFL, if you can’t keep a defense honest with deep passes, it’s like trying to bucket water out of a sinking ship.  It’s why I still am very skeptical of the end of season stretch he had last year.  Yeah, there were some impressive statistics in there, but unless he learns how to consistently connect on the deep game, he will regress back to the mean.

But I will say - Bryce, to me, was always a better comp to Drew Brees.  He is just a more mobile version.  And Drew had enough of an arm to keep a defense honest, but he was by no means a gunslinger or renowned for his arm talent.  I think arm strength-wise, he and Bryce are very similar - the difference is, Drew’s accuracy in the deep ball.  Even if you can only manage 30-40 yard chunks occasionally, it maximizing the efficiency of  them.  And I will say, when Brees really seemed to hit another level was when they added a guy like Colston - a big possession receiver he could throw it up to.  And we just took Tet…  so again, hoping for the best.
