Panthers Bringing in Newton for Visit

Bringing in a guy for a visit only means that he's in the mix, not that they're definitely going to draft him. And teams very often create smokescreens in which case you can't say 100% that he's even truly being considered. It's possible they have already completely decided against drafting him and just want to sell the idea that they'll take him to force a QB needy team to trade up.

All in all I don't put any stock in these type of reports and this goes for any player.

In the past, the Panthers have brought a lot of guys in for pre-draft visits. Most haven't been drafted. And no, I wouldn't say "smokescreen" as much as "due diligence".

The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Eric Shelton (not a good example).

Given that we're under a different regime now (at least partially) and we have the top pick, it's unknown if that trend will continue.

I would venture a guess that whoever we draft will have been brought in for an interview. Mainly bc we have the number one overall pick there won't be surprises like Clausen sliding to the second round.

They prob didn't interview him (Clausen) bc they felt there was no chance to get him. I know there are other instances but I am just using clausen as an example.

I have a feeling the guys coming in this year will be the guys we are considering.

Yeah we haven't had a pick this high a pick since we got Peppers. Its whoever the FO wants is who we get (assuming we don't trade down). If there looking at 6-10 players only one will get chosen so of course maybe all the Fairley/Green talk is the smokescreen. As much as I wan't us to I doubt Newton will be a Panther.

Once he is good he will leave Charlotte for a larger market?

I think so. Since we might draft him during a lockout, he will not be developed before the season. Maybe he will know enough next year, but essentially you run the risk of 2 rookie seasons for him based on the learining curve. He is actually ready to play in 2013 and 2014, half of his $50 million contract. New CBA allows him to go UFA in 2015. If he had any success at all, he will ask for $20 million per season. He will go to a large market because he can earn more in endorsements there. He is an entertainer and an icon.
