Is Hendon Hooker that bad he can't get a shot??

He is 27 years old, good size and weight and a good athlete. Is it not worth a shot to give him a good look? Nothing to lose since the QB room in this years draft isn't  that great. Why not roll the dice and see what happens.

Maybe another Jake, who knows.

My hopes aren’t high given that the Lions a) signed teddy bridgewater off the street who was coaching high school football near the end of last year so that they wouldn’t have to play him if Goff got hurt, b) he lost the backup job to Kyle Allen in the preseason, c) he’s been on the team for just a few weeks now

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't want to see Bryce Young benched yet. Especially for Hendon freaking Hooker. Sorry.

What are you expecting or hoping to see out of Bryce?

Yesterday absolutely killed any sliver of hope I was hanging onto. When we recovered that onside kick I was thinking, okay here's his chance. He's been having a really good second half while the opposing D has been playing soft protecting a big lead, his confidence had to be brimming, so let's see it. Here's his chance to actually show us something in a meaningful situation with a chance to go to 1-1 vs. 0-2. That's a massive difference. Historically speaking, your odds of making the playoffs are about 44% at 1-1. They plummet to 12% at 0-2. At 1-1 your season is very much alive and you're in the fight. At 0-2 you're already in panic mode because if you drop to 0-3 now you have a 3% chance at the playoffs statistically speaking. Your season is practically over before a leaf has changed.

Anyway, I got sidetracked... so, Bryce takes the field with a legit opportunity for a meaningful game winning drive while playing well and what happens? He IMMEDIATELY reverts back to looking terrible. Looking timid. Looking unsure. Taking bad sacks. Missing throws badly. The refs threw flag after flag after flag giving us second and third chances and he just couldn't do anything with it. Oh, and I should add... all of this game against a defense that was missing practically it's entire starting secondary due to injuries at this point. It was an absolutely golden gift wrapped opportunity and he absolutely blew it. He didn't just blow it, he didn't even give us a chance. Practically every other starter and most of the #2s in the league are at LEAST gonna give you a fighting chance in that scenario.

I've seen enough. I'm all the way out. This dude ain't it and those last two minutes proved it for me. Bryce seems like a legitimately good guy. A guy you'd be happy with your daughter dating. But he ain't an NFL QB.

C'mon man. We're 2 weeks into the season. When Hendon Hooker inevitably plays bad, what do we do? Go back to Bryce Young and look even more like a clown show? I'm not a Bryce Young fan at all, but it's week 2... We shouldn't be pulling the cord this early for a player who had a 36.1% QB rating and was cut after 2 seasons as a 3rd round pick. I get that the backup QB is the most popular player for fans, but he's not the answer either. We made our bed with Bryce Young, now we have to lay in it

It's not just "week two". Bryce has started 30 games at this point and it's still the same poo. Unless the opposing defense is playing Charmin soft and we seemingly have nothing to play for, Bryce can't do anything.

I'd rather try to land a Jameis Winston or Sam Howell for a late round pick than play Hooker but at this point we gotta try something else.

    • Don't take this personal, but anyone who watches pregame or game broadcast on any of the four major networks & can't point out a dozen "experts" that Luke would do a better job than, is just not paying attention. IMO
    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
