No, Ron only looked liked it worked because of Cam, so when his shoulder got smoked, it all fell apart quickly.

He was a GREAT Monday to Saturday coach, his players loved him and would run through a brick wall for him.  But he was one of the worst game day coaches I've ever seen, terrible clock management, overall decision making, and a complete inability to adjust mid-game to anything.  We always won in spite of Rivera, not because of him, I was calling for us to replace him with McDermott even after we went 15-1, because I felt like we had coaching mistakes all season long, but Cam's magical season bailed him out time and time again.

He built a reputation as Riverboat Ron because his job was on the line and he made a handful of decisions that any good coach would have made, not because he was some gambler.  

Dan Campbell is actually who the NFL media thought Ron Rivera was.

every heard of the blue ocean strategy? That’s what we were until Tepper. It worked okay. Then we decided to copy everyone else and it failed horrendously 

Just because it hasn't worked out for us, doesn't mean it's the wrong type of coach to hire.

Most HC's fail in the end, and many of them sooner rather than later.

But we fell for a snake oil salesmen in Rhule, then hired someone with a vision and didn't let them draft the QB they wanted and gave him a very quick hook because of it, and then hired someone who maybe had a chance at being decent, but got saddled with busted ass Bryce as his QB.

Failed execution doesn't mean it was the wrong idea, don't let past mistakes trick you into a poor decision for your future.

With the exception of the Arizona comeback we rarely see Canales rally the guys to make games competitive after being blown out. I think it stems from a lack of faith in Bryce and honestly Bryce’s limited physical abilities. If you have a QB who physically can’t push the ball down the field, how are you going to make a comeback when down 28 points in the second half?

 I just don’t see these guys playing for Dave Canales. 

 guys played their hearts out for Steve. They played with heart because they never wanted to feel like they let him down. That he would be disappointed if they half assed it. They had respect for Steve. It wasn’t fear, it was respect. It was palpable. It was undeniably Steve’s team. He was the leadership that they desperately needed. No, Steve was not leading this team to  SB, but this team needed, and still needs a Steve. 

No where does it feel like it is undeniably Canales’ team. Guys don’t play for him. if they had any ounce of respect for him or each other, then yesterday would have never happened. They definitely don’t respect Bryce, but they did respect Sam. 

QB is a problem, but this goes much deeper. This team needs an alpha man piloting the ship at HC first, alpha QB second. Someone who will tell Tepp to stuff it with his ‘suggestions’ … and therein lies the core issue.

The offensive or defensive minded HC is like the 3-4 or 4-3 argument. Both approaches have proven to work and both approaches have failed miserably when poorly implemented.

I do think Tepper leans heavily offense though and given the NFL's push toward rule changes that favor the offense that's the way I personally lean too. I just think the NFL is going to keep tweaking the rules to try to encourage more offense because that's what drives viewership so if that's the case I do think all else being equal you're better off with an offensive minded focus.

I'm back and forth on starting over again.

On one hand, what has Dave showed you?  The offense isn't anything special.  He's not putting his players in position to win.  He may have done that when Bryce came back last year, but he's not this year.  That's unacceptable coaching.

On the other, what is Dave holding back?  While we can talk about effort and fight, the players aren't turning on each other (yet).  They are fiesty and giving effort.  Dave also has Bryce forced upon him, and he's tried.  At the same time, Bryce has not been as billed.  Would things work better with a more aggressive minded QB?

Everything sucks on this team - time to pour baby out with the bathwater and try again.  How much more time is this going cost?  Is there a redeeming quality about this team that a new coach could come in and build up next year?

Who will want to come to the most temperamental owner in the NFL?  I can't wait to hear about the meeting of the Daves.  I think Canales needs to get this team playing well.  No more BS with fundamentals.  Get them executing plays on the field.  Show me a team that makes plays instead of giving them up.  I don't expect 12 wins the rest of the year, but show me some life.

I'm seeing too many defensive HCs with young QBs that have stalled after initial success. Hire an offensive HC while getting a playcalling OC and buy the best DC they can. A red flag is offensive guy 'taking their hands off the D to focus on the offense'. That's the OCs job so go be a HC and focus on the team.
