Wait how the heck does Bryce have an 82 if his highest subgrade in passing was only 78?  What the fug haahaha

Yea going back and taking a closer look and wtf there marks are all over the place.

I think we can all agree that the run blocking and rushing attack is what won us the game.

It setup Bryce to be able to complete some forward passes pretty nicely.

PFF feeds the beast.  So it’s largely popular for that IMO and is embraced by the NFL machine because it helps feed the beast.  Thats why you see the cute stats pop on the Monday Night football screen lol.  Hot takes? Fantasy football? Yeah, it’s good for the NFL machine for lots of reason.  I do think the league embraces them.  Not because they are actually good at doing what they claim.

actual analytics folks are critical of PFF.  Because it’s not analytics.  It’s subjective goobly goo ratings by dudes that aren’t really qualified nor even have the info to do real grading.

you got legit NFL players who say they have literally put PFF grades by the coaches grades and they are worlds apart.  Players have laughed at them pretending they can grade certain plays without the underlining info.  NFL coaches have called out there bologna at pressers.

could it be a quick tool to find out some info that has nothing to with their subjective grades? Sure.  There is a lot of data on 32 teams for cheap. But I do not buy the narrative 32 NFL teams think their grades are worth a poo or remotely accurate or meaningful.  All the OGs, founders, etc left, it’s largely clickbait.

I guess that's one way to look at it, but everyone doesn't look at it that way. That's a narrative. It's not all black and white.

Rico's four snaps in pass pro:

  • Q1 04:48 | 1st & 10 | CAR 20
Bryce's 8yd scramble early in the game was because S Donovan Wilson steamrolled Rico in the backfield on a blitz, flushing Bryce out of the pocket. Could have hit XL in the corner for a big gain otherwise.
  • Q3 07:35 | 1st & 10 | CAR 33
Marist Liufau blows right passed Rico and chases Bryce down for a sack that results in -5yds on the play.
  • Q4 12:24 | 1st & 2 | DAL 2
Completely whiffs trying to go low on Sam Williams who effortlessly gets around him and swats at Bryce. Bryce fortunately was able to shrug off and step up here to deliver the ball for TMac's second TD.
  • Q4 02:36 | 3rd & 4 | DAL 40
Rico picks up Shemar James attacking the A-gap and stands him up. This was the one rep that he won. Was also the play where the Cowboys got away with holding TMac.

So three bad and one good rep that came against a rookie 5th-rounder. The 6.1 pass block score makes sense to me after reviewing the tape.

Agreed 100%.

I would say that over a season I generally agree with pff but game by game I don't.

This is a case I just don't understand what their people say. And that is NOT meant to be a knock on Bryce.

Alright but to say that he was only average on the game?  Do you agree with that?

Honestly disgusting that someone who goes out of their way to carry water for Bryce like they're paid to for a living is trying to crap on Rico for his pass blocking.

Also the same person who has continually postured to others about being such a superior fan.

Should be embarrassed.

Say you don't understand PFF without saying you don't understand PFF...

Every week seems like some of the same people are complaining about something they clearly don't understand.

I'm not saying they are the end all resource out there but once you understand their methodology you can start to appreciate some of their work.

For example, their grading system isn't a high school grading system, try to look at some of it in relative terms.  Rico had an 82 rushing grade, that's pretty good.  I would be curious to know how that compares to every other running back this past weekend.

Also, I think he had a few penalties, which if I'm not mistaken are graded pretty harshly.

Okay sure.

An 82 rushing grade is, according to pff, bottom of a "good" tier. See below:

So in the end Rico "I made history on Sunday" Dowdle has a 67 on the day. So he's on the high end of average. Not even above average. Just average.

Now call me crazy or say I don't understand PFF, if you want. But I'd call Ricos rushing elite, and his overall play at minimum... Good.
