The Bryce Young "Game Winning Drive" narrative needs to end

I don't think it is an opinion when the stats back it up.

If he was as garbage as people claim, he would not be capable of having 10/10 drives with 3 TDs and a perfect passer rating.

Someone compared him to Clausen.  That is just hate imo.  Not sure why.

People on here honestly think he can’t throw a 25 yard pass. They actually truly believe that. Im not sold yet on Bryce moving forward but you can’t have an objective conversation on him anymore on this board.

Not really any point in arguing back and forth about it, other than for the sake of arguing. If you believe in him, you believe in him.

I don't. I point to his W-L record. I point to how awful he plays. I point to how he crow-hops around (as another poster put it a while back) in the pocket. I point to how success is so incredibly rarely ever seen at that size in the NFL, at any position. That it's year 3, and there are still "questions" just seems ridiculous. I don't hate him. He has the weight of all the expectations of the organization and fans on his shoulders and just he isn't cut out for it. 9 wins total, in year 3 is just not it, and none of the excuses are going to hold water on that mark.

I don't think he has the strongest arm out there, but he clearly can.  He has done it for us.  I know it doesn't fit the hater agenda, though.

You are going to see whatever you want.  You are just going to ignore the points I make, because you want to hate on the guy.

He's not Jimmy Clausen.  The guy shows perfection out there at times.  Why not give him the benefit of the doubt, especially when he is our only option right now, and we have seen this play out with other QBs?  Surely you don't think we are the best home for a QB?

Clearly he can win games when the cast supports him.

Honestly I dont know how you can evaluate anyone else on offense when your QB plays bad

He can throw a 25 yard pass but it's how he throws it

The narrative is that in game winning drives he is clutch and about 9x out of 10 he is gonna come up with the win. Anything that happened before that clutch final game winning drive is irrelevant to the narrative.

The only argument that could be made is that it's a small sample size, which I concede.

I am in the middle of catching up and got this far. I can’t let it pass. So quickly….
25yards is just not true. People question his arm strength, I do,  but 25 yards? Come on man. That’s just bullshit.

This is what people don’t get. For him to really zip a ball longer than 15-20 yards or to get the ball wayyyyy downfield he has to set up just right and put his body into it. Which is frustrating because you see the Mayfields, Mahomes, Herberts, etc make the same throw running for their life on their backfoot.

he can do it, its just harder for him to do it than most QBs.

That is fair, but it makes me long for a statistic for everything that did happen before that, that set that whole last drive up to be the deciding score.
And fwiw (and I am not looking it up), but how many times was there a chance or two to close the gap and set up a game winning drive, except that didn’t happen? Or stalling and falling short? You do have to keep it close for those scenarios.. but do they factor too? And how do you weight it?

Anyway, on the Jake thing. Putting Bryce on a level with Jake is all kinds of messed up.
Jake smoked it his first game for the team. All the way to the Super Bowl. Everybody loved him and for good reason.
Total opposite of Bryce’s arc. Totally different situation.
Jake was a low rent FA gamble that seriously paid off, and immediately.
Again, polar opposite. Crazy overpay, and we still don’t know if he is going to pay off.
Bryce needs to be evaluated without trying to compare eras. And the yardage… what does 200 yards a game x 16 come to? Add another 200 for game 17 for Jake or pull it off of Bryce. It isn’t that different if we play the style of game that we did in his successful game and a half here lately. Of course he gets to play and compile, and that is fluid atp so just saying.

Comparing Bryce to Pickles is another crazy take imo.  No idea why y'all hate this kid so bad.

I don't think I am going to get anywhere if you can seriously make that comparison.  Wild.

Double check Bryce’s rookie season.  Bryce is more comparable to Pickles than Jake or Cam.   Continuing to bring up Cam and Jake is wild.

Bryce would have already been gone if he cost a second round pick.  That’s a fact.  He essentially was after 2 games into year 2 but the FO fugged it up

Tepper? The guy that directs the coaches towards goals that he set for them… that guy. He is the one.

I don’t think he ever was going to be expelled from class, they had him come in for garbage time maybe the 2nd week he was benched.
I will say this. People said he wasn’t under pressure the last part of the year when he did better, but he was fighting for his career and that’s pressure. And he saved his career too.

I don’t reject him for those kinds of things I reject him for the physical things. I have always brought it down to he has slim margin for error and has to be perfect. People with the tool set have a little fatter margin for error. Why make it harder on yourself? Got nothing to do with hating him.
I am no statistician but game that margin thing out a lot and see how that works.

What didn’t you root harder for Jimmy Clausen?  By Bryce logic, everyone should have shunned the idea of drafting Cam Newton.   Drafted a WR instead.  Given Jimmy more support.

pessimism is only frowned upon on the huddle when it is applied to select people.  A lot of the same  folks that deem people pessimistic for pooing on a really bad QB….poo on all sorts of different Panthers and coaches.

Bryce doesn’t have traditional NFL tools and has been really bad overall going into his 3rd season.  It’s not being a pessimist at this stage to be tired of the little engine that really can’t

You are actually, genuinely comparing Bryce to Jimmy fuging Pickles?

Jimmy accounted for 3 touchdowns in his 10 starts in 2010. In Bryce’s 10 games post benching last year, he accounted for 20 touchdowns.

Jimmy threw three touchdowns in 2010. Three. Bryce has thrown 10 touchdowns through 6 games. He is currently on track to throw for 3300 yards, 28 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Wtf are we even talking about anymore. I mean seriously

    • It seems the needs for the Panthers are at positions that tend to require intelligence to lift others--going from "good to great"--FS, ILB, and C--as you say. While i like Rodriguez a lot (can see the Hurricanes [Jarvis] and Panthers with a mustache player to get the fans into it)--I also like Golday (WLB?).  However, take a look at smallish Kyle Louis (Pitt).  He is known to be cerebral, but he is small (5'11" I think) and for that, I moved him lower.  But look at the different LB events at the combine--he is near the top in most of them.  I see him as a sleeper.  So if we wait until the second round, we can get a solid LB.   So what if we grab a free agent edge specialist (veteran) for pass situations and help develop Princely.  We draft FS (Oregon) first--maybe trading back to do so--I dunno.  We sign a free agent ILB and draft a rookie like Rodriguez or Louis.  In the third, we could probably find a center, like (former OT Parker from Duke) or Slaughter or Pew (may have to trade up).   So, as you say, others are fighting for Edge players, WRs, and OTs early like seagulls on the beach fighting over spilled corn chips, We sit back, grab intelligent players that make others better.  FS, ILB, and C. OT scares me more that Edge if we do this--but for those screaming for an edge--we have edge players--2 with starting experience who have had some degree of success.  JC Davis can play either T spot and he is good at pass blocking--a bit raw--but could be developmental depth that could play in a pinch. Or you could draft a solid OT with shorter arms that are driving them down into day 3--and convert them to G or C later.  Nijman and BC being re-signed could provide enough to hold down the job until a developmental OT (World, Oregon?) prepares for a shot at it.  Wagner (ND) could play LT but is probably a future RT--he is expected to be drafted early day 3.  My favorite day 3 OT sleeper?  Keagan Trost, Missouri. Great run blocker, soild pass blocker in SEC--just shorter arms.  Maybe a guard down the road, but for the time being, a T.  Not ideal, but at least you are building for the future.
    • I'm not like most people in this thread in regards to Love. I'm not like most in regards to RBs either. I think certain ones will always be drafted in the first round because they are valued that highly. From an on-the-field perspective, they are as valued as ever; business-wise and contract-wise at times to re-up, that's where things can get tricky with valuation. That being said, Love oozes potential and makes higher-ups' mouths water. I know that he if somehow he is available at 19, he will be considered if not taken. You don't leave that type of talent on the board unless there is another compelling player of arguably equal or more value at another position of need that may have a higher priority (like maybe Sonny Styles). Now all that being said, I  don't realistically see either one of them being there at 19 according to the draftniks.
