Talking up Cam in our best interest

If you are the Carolina Panthers front office and you decide that you do not want to risk the first pick of the draft on a QB who has a high bust potential what do you do?

I would invest all my chips in making Cam Newton sound like the best thing since sliced bread. If we are trying to trade down, I would think we should be publically announcing that Cam Newton is the greatest prospect we have seen in decades.

I guess what I am saying is, right now, watch out for smoke and mirrors. Our number 1 pick is only as valuable as we make it appear. (Newton seems to be that, could be awsome type)

Of course, I believe we will trade out of the number 1 spot. Others might not believe that.

Nobody is trading up to #1 for a player just because Carolina says they like him. If it happens, it's because they have done their own research and like the kid regardless of what the Panthers say.

I think what he meant is a team may trade up if they like him and feel the panthers could draft him.

Don't you think it would be kinda stupid to talk a guy up then expect people to trade with YOU to get him??? If that was the plan it wouldn't work with the first overall pick.

Is like saying..."I really love this car but I'll let you buy it even though I love it so much.". Doesn't make any sense.

Carolina ain't gonna trade the pick likely and there isn't a must have guy. The #2 guy at each position is right there with whoever goes first in the draft. If you want a DE instead of giving up something for Bowers you get Quinn etc.

Monstercat, I agree and sorta disagree.

Teams will assume that the Panthers have done their homework, but different teams have different needs and philosphies. However, if they abandon an interest in Newton, then they might assume it is for good reason, and they would then deal with Denver and not us to move up for him.

Given that 6 teams supposedly already have Newton as their highest rated player, we wouldn't need to talk up Newton that much at all. All we would have to do is say we are inclined to take him but would open to look at trade options. Plain and simple. The fact that we are not saying that and not being clear that we will even take him saying we are looking at 7-10 guys, would actually argue that we are going to use the pick ourselves.

Of course Hurney doesn't usually do his business in the news so honestly I doubt he would announce it if we were looking to trade. What you would hear is that "league sources" are saying that we are shopping the first pick but you won;t hear it from us.

Actually, it makes perfect sense.

If you talk a guy down or act like you aren't interested, you get no trade offers, but the team below you might.

Teams only talk trade with you if they think they might lose out on the guy they want.

The more hype a top player gets, the more people get interested, the better the chance you get a bidding war and end up with a better offer.

I think it will be easy to determine if we are going to trade down.

If we start to talk about how impressive Cam Newton is, and how we would likely select him with the first pick, teams that really want him will be in the trade picture. It is the only way to get decent value for our first pick.

Does anyone think there is another player in this draft that we could possibly warrant another team going after the first pick? I don't.

what would be more in the pantehrs best interest is that rivera and hurney are convinved that this coaching staff can help newton reach his potential and that newton's past mistakes won't be mistakes he'll make again.

us taking newton and him being able to play up to his potential and gil brandt's thoughts on him being correct will benefit the panthers more than any player we have ever brought in.

    • Gronk is the best TE of all time, but he also played with Brady. Clarke was great, but had Peyton and in an era TE's didn't make crazy money. Kittle is great, but the two times he's made the SB, he was still on his rookie contract for one, and the other the 49ers had Purdy on a cheap rookie deal which help them build the rest of the roster. So again, it's not about not wanting an elite TE, of course it would be nice.  But realistically, in today's NFL, unless that elite TE with a top end TE salary is on a team with a GOAT level QB and/or other serious cap savings (i.e. key players on rookie deals), then I think it's not a good use of cap space.
    • This place was the poo pre tepper with tons of hilarious posters like phillyB. Joined in the 2000s during the 07 season and have been here bitching about this team since. but yeah its sadly been dying a slow death, every time I come to this site I am surprised its still up. I think the 2015 season was the absolute peak, the Panthers and this board especially just haven't "felt" the same since then. Igo should really sell the board since he clearly doesn't care anymore. Also, Reddit blows and the Bryce defenders on there need Jesus.
    • Guessing the price is too rich here given the injury history.  2024 was brutal and production dropped off in 2025 with a few more injuries (albeit rough qb play).    Don’t really understand the narrative that Young can’t benefit from talented upgrades on offense. Especially here with respect to a tight end. Any QB will benefit from talented receivers that threaten the top of coverage and tight ends with skills to stress zone.    The age and injury history, coupled with what he’s likely asking, just probably means we can better spend that money elsewhere.
