Nothing Defines the Bryce Young Era Better Than that 4th Down Play

We were talking a couple weeks ago about the threads started before the game was over.

It is a mixed bag to date. Let’s see the follow up. Historically the follow ups have been big letdowns. Putting two high performance games back to back would be new ground. That I have been waiting to see him do.

Exactly this. I’m overjoyed to see them playing meaningful games but I need to see them handle success. Thus far they have shown 0 ability to do so.

These next two games will be huge for him. He plays well during them, il start to believe.

We are still the Panthers. Here is what I expect: that ankle swells up and we don’t get to see consecutive weeks.

There was a very clear replay shown on the main broadcast showing the RG spiking the QBs right ankle with his left cleat right at the snap. You had to have not been watching to put the blame on the QB for that.

Yeah not sure what broadcast everyone was watching but they literally slowed it down and showed Zavala immediately kicking his foot out and planting it on Bryce’s injured ankle. This play was 1000% on Zavala. I’m telling you all it’s easier to just accept it when Bryce plays bad and also accept it when he plays good. Coming at it with some I was right agenda just makes you look silly…

Zavala is complete ass cheeks and shouldn't even be playing tbh

but he is a natural Left guard and playing on the right side changes his footwork and technique

The guy played most of the game with a twisted ankle and had the best game of his career. He might not be it but today isn't the day to throw poo.

Yep, this is the one game the Bryce fanboys can absolutely talk poo to the rest of us. Dude played a great game and single-handedly won us the game

Again, it’s not about that single play.  Me saying that defines his era is reflective of 2.5 years of work.  Yes, Zavala played a big part in that failure of a play, but as the commentators mentioned, Bryce also has to get tf back as soon as he snaps it.  He has always had more issues operating from under center as well.  That all ties in to the fact that for over 2.5 years, he has these inexplicable plays that you never see happen anywhere else.  I’ve been on this Earth four decades and watching or playing football for three of them, and I do not recall ever seeing that happen before.  Have I seen someone fumble the snap on 4th?  Yes.  Have I seen someone try to escape pressure after getting the snap and falling over or flailing around until they were sacked?  Sure.  Throw a pick?  Yes.  Fumble after getting the snap?  Yes.  Lots of bad things can and have happened.  Not even getting out from under the center, falling on your back, then looking like you can’t figure out how to get up until you’re touched down?  Never.  So even when other players are involved in the fug ups since Bryce has been the QB, the point is, it’s some intangible quality that is present with him at QB.  Things happen that shouldn’t happen.  Inexplicable fug ups are the norm.

And again, I fully considered we had 3+ mins and the defense was playing well when I posted it.  I even believed that with the way Bryce was playing outside of the 4th down flubs, that it was likely we could win…  and I am ecstatic we won.  But again, the point of this thread is the play was representative of a much bigger and persistent problem.  Look how great we felt after getting over .500 and then had a gimme win at home against a fuging 1-8 team.  Bryce comes out and doesn’t even show up while getting outplayed by several magnitudes against a 27 year old 2nd round pick in his second start.  That is fuging inexplicable and should never fuging happen.  Brian St. Pierre would’ve looked like fuging Joe Montana in that scenario.  Dameyune Craig would’ve looked like Mahomes.  But it was like Bryce didn’t even show up.  That’s where this thread comes from.  As good as winning today feels, do I trust him to come back out and do it again next week, or ever again?  Absolutely not.  And that’s the problem.

Again it’s simply easier to say he played good when he does and to say he played bad when he does. Last week he played bad. Period. Highlighting a play where a 300 lb OL plants on his injured ankle by stepping wide immediately during a game where he set the passing yard record looks silly. It’s no different than a Bryce fanboy highlighting a play (that had nothing to do with him as well) from last week.

He was also stepped on after hiking it at 3:04 and touched at 3:02 ending the play. 2 seconds of figuring out why his ankle got smashed by his own OL.

This makes absolutely no sense. You’ve never seen a QB get stepped on by an OL in 3 decades? Commentators were saying that stuff you’re talking about before the key replay, when they thought his legs got tangled with the center. I know exactly which comments you’re talking about. They were talking about staggering his stance, not spending enough time under center, etc. THEN the replay came that showed what really happened and that all stopped. Sounds like you just had a perspective you wanted to be validated rather than being intellectually honest about the specific play at hand.

I disagree.  And it’s not to be edgy.  I feel like this thread used a single play to illustrate a years-long problem, and that is verifiable.  The vast amount of his body of work is subpar.  The amount of his “wtf was that?” plays are more than any player I have ever watched.  The opportunities he’s been given to commit that amount of plays is also more than any player I can remember.  To come out one week and throw for 450 yards and 3 TDs is awesome, but then what about the games like last week against the Saints?  It’s not an agenda.  It’s rooted in fact.  I praised him a couple weeks ago in a thread after a game for playing his best game I had seen him play as a pro.  And then again, as I previously said, he comes out and lays an egg like no rotten egg ever seen before on what should have been a gimme of a game.  As good as this win feels and as cool as it is that he had the box score he had today, the issue with him is consistency.  So for all the “this thread didn’t age well” comments floating because we won and our team as a collective was able to overcome those flubs and turnover on downs, in part because ATL is ass, one week to the next you never know what you’re gonna get with Bryce.  I’m hoping for the best, but do I believe we’ll be closer to the mean or worse?  Yes.

Sounds like you’re just caping because I have already stated my intent when I posted.  Was it hyperbolic?  Sure.  But that’s what’s fun about this board.  I don’t need validation. I’ve been posting what I think, good or bad, for years.  In my everyday life, I speak my truth and stand on that.  I don’t care about validation, affirmation, or popularity.  I enjoy the discussion, good or bad.

If you re-read, I didn’t say I’ve never seen a QB get stepped on.  I said I’ve never seen one, to the best of my memory, have that happen in that fashion on a 4th down and then lay there like the MedAlert lady.  And I said I brought up that play because again, how often do you see other QBs have that happen?  How often do you see QBs who are “super processors” decide to throw a ball out the back of an end zone on 4th and goal to go?  How often do you see them get squared up with a defender and fumble before even getting hit like a scared child?  He does poo that other QBs NEVER do.  Some have, but they don’t stick around for long.  The good ones NEVER do this poo.  And that’s the problem.  And again, yes, Zavala is a fuging chode and played his part in that play…  but I go back to Bryce and his limitations and this being an ongoing issue.  It’s like if it’s not him fuging up, someone will because Bryce is out there.
