Dumb teams make dumb decisions. That being said, this is just speculation, nothing concrete yet.

I think they are saying the general feel is the expectation that his option will get picked up. That said, I don't think that is set in stone. It does indicate what some of us have felt for a lot of this season, that they are leaning towards him being their guy.

We are absolutely picking up his 5th year option. This is the same team that picked up Sam Darnold's 5th year option without him playing a snap for this franchise.

If you think they wouldn't do the same for a QB they traded a haul up to number 1 overall to take and who has a chance to lead us to a playoff game in year 3 then I don't know what to tell you.

Despite the protest of many people here there is no way we get a clean break from Bryce to another QB. We will either cut/trade him next offseason and have to eat the 5th year dead cap or we extent him and have to eat whatever the dead cap is from that extension. There is always the chance that he figures things out and is able to become a top 10 QB but at the end of year 3 it looks increasingly unlikely. He's a physically limited game manager with a clutch gene.

It is just speculation. That said, it is crucial to recognize how these things get done and how business is conducted in the league. Picking up the 5th year is not so much an outlier contract year. Once that is done, it's not really realistic to think they are going to sign Young to an extension that would be in the ballpark of that 5th year. That is why if a team and player are not a good long-term fit, they tend part ways before that 5th year.

3rd year but you are correct

Whats the absolute worst thing that could happen if you didnt pick up his 5th.  He absolutely balls out and you have to either franchise tag him or pay a bit more?  Its an incredibly calculated risk not picking it up

The worst is probably the Daniel Jones outcome. The team pays through the nose for a player they didn't really want and looks like jackasses doing it, and in the Giants case, go back to square 1.

just because Jones has a good year doesnt make him a good qb.   There is too much history and film to show what type of qb he is.  Same with darnold.  Can they win with elite coaching and an elite team, sure to a degree, but this is the nfl at some point the qb has to take over in the playoffs.  Thats just how this league is built now.

Did you ignore the part where I said draft a guy? We aren’t getting one of the top 3 this year, he’s going to need to sit a bit. Unless you want to trade picks for a Mac Jones type which would be dumb with where we are

You can replace our present day #1 with a better player for a cheap.  Replace our #2 with a better player for cheap.  You can replace our practice squad QB with a better guy for nothing.   We don’t need a top 3 pick or do nothing.  The best we can do isn’t some developmental add.

Mac Jones was a 5 million add for the 49ers last offseason.  So you are using the wrong time marker of getting QBs to rebuild the room.   Trubisky I think was. 2 million.  Both those dirt cheap options, to be backups, that are better players than 1 thru 3 on our roster lol.   And we 100% can add a Bryce caliber QB this upcoming offseason for peanuts.

I do trust Tillis here and feel like this gives Canales a game manager at QB on a “cheap” deal while spending money elsewhere. At its peak, $26M in 2027 is middle of the road AAY for NFL QBs in 2025. It would sandwich him between Justin Fields and Baker Mayfield.

This gives them time to add speed/separation at WR, a bonafide TE threat, lock up Icky, find Moton’s replacement, , find a guy to wear the dot at LB, find an edge guy opposite Scourton, add a DL to pair with DB while he’s still in his prime and figure out the secondary.

This move, if it happens, does not guarantee Bryce is the QB beyond 2026. It does not also mean he is signing a long-term deal either.

Darnold was a little different scenario. The Jets announced they weren't going to pick up the option, and found an idiot team to be a trade partner with them on the deal. That idiot team not only sent lots of draft cpital, but then decided to pick up Darnold's option year.

Really, it worked out as well as it could have for the Jets that our dumbass came along.

With Jones, he played for the Giants that 4th year, his last contracted year, and got a playoff win. The Giants were not in a great spot at that moment.
