A new contract right now would be a mistake.

If Bryce is truly clutch, he'll show it in the playoffs.

Assuming a typical Bryce performance, I'd like to bring in Malik Willis, and see how camp goes and if Bryce struggles early again and we regress to the mean in one point games with awful offense, we give him a shot.

If they can bring in competition that doesn't prevent them from bringing in definite starters at other positions of need, then they should ABSOLUTELY do that. No questions asked. But there are way too many holes on this team that need to be addressed before going all out to get a QB. FTR, the same was true in 2023.

So you think Mac Jones would be an improvement over Young and would bring him in next year? He's signed with SF through 2026 so it will cost something to get him here. Bryce is only 9M and it's gauranteed.

I looked at his numbers and statistically, they are very similar to Youngs. I doubt he would be an improvement.

I would love to see how you think they are similar statistically.

If you want to talk Mac Jones specifically, it's also likely to be expensive in terms of draft capital. Jones is on a $6 mil deal and performed very well in SF this year. SF has all the leverage they need to ask for more than even market value, because he had very high value as a very cheap, very capable backup.

Mac Jones is UNQUESTIONABLY better than Bryce Young. There isn't even a decent argument to be made otherwise.

I say that and I don't want Mac Jones as our future QB. He's a middling to lower end starter, at best. But he is very much an improvement over Bryce.

So do you want me to lay out more potential and theoretical options or was Mac Jones enough?

I don't think Malik Willis is going to demand huge started money but he will get paid decently. It may be he gets a short term contract with a bad team as their started under a new coach.

But I think QB is one of our bigger needs... However, we don't really have the ability right now to fix it without damaging the rest of the roster like we did in 2023. So yeah I agree... I just don't want a new contract for Bryce. But I'm actually fine with the extension as long as we really do upgrade the QB room overall.

It never fails. Everytime I bring up Young in a post, the three amigos ( electro's horse, mrcompletely11 and CRA. ) always show up.

electro never says anything related to the post, mrcompletely just says "look how good electro sounds" and CRA never says anything new.

Responding to any of them is just a waste of time.

I think someone is going to pay big for Willis.

But I agree, having a plan B is always smart.

So Jones is a no go ( we can debate on who is better between the two later ). Since he isn't the long term answer, who else is there you could bring in. I think Willis is gonna cost too much and won't want to come here unless he can be the starter

After his prime time national TV performances this year, no one is “bringing in” Malik Willis to kick the tires for a season IMO. He is going to secure the bag on a 4+ year deal from somebody that likes what they’ve seen and thinks he is there long term solution. Whether that is us or not (it isn’t us) remains to be seen, but it won’t be someone seeing if he can battle their existing QB for a spot. He will be brought in as THE guy. My guess is by someone that gets a new coach over the next few months.

No one is suggesting going all out to get a QB.  You can get a cheap QB that raises the ceiling of our O to be a bridge......while you wait to actually go address the QB.

Bryce is a bridge QB.  That's the tier QB he is.  A body a team would have as they wait to make a move for QB.  Folks just want a better bridge QB that makes the O more threatening until we go make a move for QB

I'm not sure who. The best available FA QB's:

Malik Willis - Will get big money from some team. Has looked good in Green Bay, but what are you getting if you take him out of that system?

Daniel Jones - Will almost certainly re-sign with the Colts. Coming off major injury.

Aaron Rodgers - Will either retire or re-sign with Steelers.

Russell Wilson - Could retire, but even if he doesn't he's not a clear upgrade over Bryce at this point.

Joe Flacco - Probably an upgrade, but would be a REALLY short-term option and that assumes he doesn't retire.

Mitchell Trubisky - I wouldn't hate bringing him in as a backup to push Bryce and he could be an upgrade over Dalton at this point but there are still a lot of questions.

Marcus Mariota - It's like if Bryce was older and Hawaiian.

Carson Wentz - See: Flacco, Joe and subtract a few years.

Sam Howell - I'm sure the UNC homers will hype him up, and I wouldn't be opposed to kicking the tires, but calling him a clear upgrade over Bryce is a stretch.

Zach Wilson - Has had multiple chances and has never looked like even a passable NFL QB. Pass.

Trey Lance - He's like the anti-Bryce. Has all the physical tools, but struggles with processing. Again, wouldn't mind him as a backup, but he's not a clear upgrade.
Gardner Minshew - It's like if Bryce was older, slower, white and had a 70s porn star mustache.

Skylar Thompson - Some potential here, and another guy I wouldn't be opposed to signing as a backup, but he's certainly not a clear upgrade.

Tyrod Taylor - At his age, likely not an upgrade or even a passable backup.
Kenny Pickett - lol

Jimmy Garoppolo - Was always overrated, now he's old too.

Case Keenum - Aging backup who was never that good in his younger days.

Josh Johnson - See: Keenum, Case.

Brandon Allen - Who?

Teddy Bridgewater - Will probably go back into retirement, but isn't an upgrade regardless.

Brett Rypien - Camp fodder at best.

Maybe, maybe not. He wouldn't be the first QB who struggled with consistency early in his career and figured it out eventually.

Several of those guys you listed are upgrades over Bryce and several more are potential upgrades.

There will be other starting(or former) QB's coming available too(Geno Smith, Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, etc). Or there are backups that can clearly be upgrades(Mac Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Davis Mills, etc).

Now, how realistic any of these options are is questionable. For any of the acquisition options, price would be a big factor. For any of the older veterans their motivation for even wanting to come to a team like this is pretty questionable.

That extends to several other FA candidates, as well. Are we operating in a therotical world where Bryce is still here and presumed to be the starter? That is going to eliminate some options. Are we operating in a theoretical world where it is a "competition" and Bryce is still here? Or is Bryce gone completely?

Those are all factors that make various of these scenarios both more and less "realistic."

But, if the question is can we upgrade over Bryce? There is no question we can do so through free agency or potentially the draft.

Right. but no extension for Bryce yet. 5th year option? Sure. I think Bryce's camp will agree they aren't in the best place to demand an extension or top dollar.
