The fact that we're discussing a third-year QB with the likes of busts, backups and virtual rookies should make you pipe down a bit in my estimation. I mean, I can accept the reality of the situation--the option is pretty much a nohbrainer--but Bryce needs to improve greatly before I consider him a franchise-level starter.

Pipe down?  I haven't said anything that's not common sense.

I'm not claiming he's a top 5 QB or worthy of the trade assets we gave up for him or the future franchise.  I'm just saying that he's had several great games and deserves a 5th year option at the reasonable salary.  Maybe next year he puts it all together.

If he does, GREAT.

If he doesn't, well that sucks and time to find a new QB.

I understand the panthers picking it up, but Byoung was the 27th ranked starting qb this year based on QBR 30th looking at regular qb rating, 28th in yards per game,  thats in his third year so basically they picked up the fifth year option for a well below average nfl starter.  Hopefully they are not going to just sit on the qb room for next year need to bring in a vet and a draft a qb best player wins

Well it depends on the price, if he's willing to get paid like the 20th best QB, I'm fine with a long term contract lol.  But if he wants top 10 or 15 money, nope.

Pick up the 5th. Use Bryce like Alex smith then draft a mahomes type player.  Bryce is the perfect bridge.

Looking back at the prior years just looking at y/g QBR and qb rating, Byoung really hasnt progressed very much.  I dont understand how people especially media can say he is an above average or even average nfl qb he has yet to show from a stats perspective for a season that he is even higher than 27th ranked.  Oh well panthers being panthers I expect a long term contract for him soon paying him around the 10th highest qb in the league.

This is a partially bad take.  Willis is the only guy mentioned here that can reasonably be expected to perform at a level higher than Bryce.  Winston and Minshew is washed, and Howell was not good in Washington as a starter and didn’t field a single snap this past year. I swear the only reason people are obsessed over him is that he went to UNC.

You’re not going to have better success, or even potential for success with those guys as your QB as you would with Bryce. Now, if you want to argue this thing from a production per dollars perspective, that it’d be better to roll with one of them instead because we could allocate the savings elsewhere on the roster, that’d be a better argument IMO. I’d disagree with it; relying on a QB making less they $5MM/year that isn’t on a rookie contract is not a winning strategy.  But I could see the argument that it’s possibly a viable alternative to Bryce on a $25MM/year contract.

But no, none of those QBs are better than Bryce.

Winston's only better in that he's not Bryce. Statistically, he was worse.

You may could say he's been one of the worst starting qbs in the NFL for 3 years.  Some people refuse to accept this

Saying he's better than Tua or Jacoby is a little bit of a stretch when you start looking at the numbers. Saying he's better than Ward or McCarthy at this point generally means nothing. Anyone who is being totally objective, in my opinion, I'm thinking will at least acknowledge that picking up Bryce's 5th year option is just as much (if not more) about what was invested to acquire him---and the Panthers' overall situation in regards to draft position, lack of draft capital, real capital or obvious options, and just the general QB market--and his, at best, middling play (and that's a marked stretch). Though we're giving Bryce another year, based upon his play, I don't think that most NFL types will have great expectations.

No.  He has been one of (if not he most) inconsistent players in the NFL.

Extreme highs and extreme lows.   Based on those highs, he has 100% earned a 5th year.

Based on the lows, he has shown we can't give him a long term deal yet.

A lot more extreme lows than highs though. Like 10:1

I think the tell on that is how they construct the QB room in a few months. If they don’t change anything they are hypnotized.
