Should Canalas bring someone else in to call offensive plays?

Recommended Posts

I think that the Head Coach's duties during a game are to keep tempo up, handle issues that have arisen on the unit that is off the field, to manage the brakes/gas/clutch juggling and to cheerlead the players. An offensive coordinator, sitting in the sky box with an all-field from above view should be calling plays with some guidance from the HC.

Canales can lead men but he has trouble delegating and, more importantly, he can become too timid. We need an OC who attacks and exploits. Not someone standing on the sidelines trying to juggle geese AND get plays in on time.

We could quibble about was that an answer to what I asked but I  don’t see it as being one. Look, he agreed to this Evero thing. Up front. Apparently anyway. Took the job with those conditions in place. I buy that and will work off of it.
This play calling issue isn’t the same thing. I am not in the mood to delve into Canales’ shortcomings and get out the pitchforks at the moment.
I will abstain from that topic and stick to the quandary the dissenters who want to usurp his play calling power, find themselves in. As far as that goes I am still on the fence and think the play calling is Bryce centric and the play selection/playbook is affected. That does not mean I know that if the playbook was open he would be great play caller. Just that he is hampered right now.

Inserting an OC not of Canales’ approval changes the original parameters of the assumed agreement.
Unless you think Tepper placed a contractual prescription to allow Tepper to dictate that he can insert a play caller of his choosing after a time period if he is not satisfied with Canales’ work.
Which, do you really think that is in play?  I do not.

Unless it is, Canales has the option to yea or nay. As I said, it could be forced on him. But they only do that if they want him out.
And as of now his stock is up, I would have to say I don’t own any but I think it is up. He had the stadium rocking, the team in the playoffs, and has that sorry lil draft pick trending upward. Even at this very low rate.  I think he has ‘hand’ right now as they say on Seinfeld. This is something that may get play in the 2026 season, not now. IMO.

Forcing a coach to fire a coordinator is a common NFL occurrence. In this case it would be forcing him to fire himself from those duties.

IMO you only fire a coach for a few reasons

1. He isnt getting the most he can out of the roster/talent - can’t say that applies to Canales

2. He’s lost the locker room and players are checked out - I would say that’s not the case and the complete opposite with Canales

3. Team keeps coming up short in the playoffs with a Super Bowl level roster and they just need to make a change to see if a new coach can get them over the hump (think McDermott if the Bills don’t make the Super Bowl again) - Obviously that can’t apply to Canales yet

4. It has simply run its course and become stagnant and a change is needed (John Harbaugh) - Again doesnt apply to Canales

That generally happens when the coach is on the hot seat and on the way out. Having a hard time thinking about where a guy was forced to change and he wasn’t out the door not that long after.

They ain’t firing him, they ain’t looking at firing him.

Morgan actually said it was something that would be discussed but I felt like he wanted it to be Canales’ decision. Which goes to my question of how do you insert a guy etc… maybe they figure it out.

The only option that allows both Dan and Dave to win here, is promoting Idzik to OC.

This way, Dave can focus on the overall team concept and make sure he’s a HC more than a glorified OC that is overwhelmed. By the same token, I assume Idzik’s philosophy is a carbon copy of Canales’ since they’ve been connected at the hip forever.

Much like marriage, this is the compromise and both leaders get what they want….while giving in to appease the other.

If you bring in an OC to call plays and he's a stud he will be gone in 1 year and you are right back where you started (over and over again).

The hope would be that people under/around that OC would learn some things from him.

I would prefer someone from the outside to help grow Dave or Idzik as a playcaller.  He has some potential but there have been several games where he was simply outmatched by his opponent.  Dan leaving it to Dave means I kind of doubt it will happen, but it would do this staff a lot of good if it did.

This is a rare situation where the fans are probably more objective than the front office because Evero should be gone and Canales should give up play calling.  Neither of these things will happen because Morgan and Tepper don't want to impact any momentum now that this team is finally somewhat relevant and competing.

Agreed, an outside playcaller that could use some of Dave’s concepts and “big picture” while infusing some fresh ideas and more fluid within-game adjustments would be welcomed.

I also think our running game became very predictable and stalled out towards the end. It looked like the playbook wasn’t deep enough and they didn’t do a good job of Bryce being under center/empty backfieding it way too much.

He already is the OC. Canales let him call some plays during the preseason.  He is greener than Canales in that role.

We could get lucky and he could be really good, naturally, but that is a long shot.

    • You bring up a good point on the stability part and i would agree that probably will factor into it. But yes, Tepper does have a strong influence on who stays/goes but I still believe ultimately it'is Morgan, Tilis and Canales who will decide.
    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
