Schrader / Jeremiah mock draft experiment

I wouldn't cry over the pick, could work out well. I just see a crowded TE room that is already underutilized and some glaring needs elsewhere.

But hey, what do I know?

I wonder if the picks had been in reversed order and Jeremiah had picked (he has a North Carolina/App State background) would his better knowledge of Carolina have made a difference? Schrager has a great football mind, but we're such a minor league team to him I'm not sure if he knows or cares about our nuances.

Tight ends in the first round just have so much risk. Even guys that look like guarantees at the position, fail. OJ Howard is a big one that comes to mind (and I REALLY liked him and thought he was going to be a stud in the NFL).

I know that every player/position can be a gamble, but when you look at Kyle Pitts (he's come a long way, but he has clearly underperformed), TJ Hockenson, Hayden Hurst, Noah Fant, Eric Ebron, etc., NONE of these guys changed the dynamic of their team for the better. Zero. In fact, most of them end up being traded before their rookie deal is up.

This draft has some good tight ends. I wouldn't spend a 1st on one.

We have taken two TEs in three seasons I think, and Sanders may not pan out or it may have been a sophomore slump, but we took a guy last year that was coming on.
I am not in favor of TE in round one and really don’t consider it a high priority in any round.

In the first, draft a guy who plays a position that you have to pay $25-60m on a second contract.  If you have 4 of these players starting (over time), you save a lot of money that can be spent upgrading many other positions.  The first rounder is not just about the talent of the player--it is a business arrangement.

WR?  I am fine with it.  OT?  I get it.  Edge? Sure. CB? I understand.  Safety or TE?  Not in round 1.

I think the Panthers will target Delp early day 3.  So it was written.

well said.  The TE is great for the middle of the field (crosses, curls, seams, etc) and Bryce is not great throwing there.  Maybe they blame the TE.

I wouldn't mind it. Everyone talks about TE not being a need and that Canales doesn't utilize TEs in the passing game, meanwhile we have one of the worst TE units in the NFL and we'd be dumb to heavily utilize them in the passing game. If Canales wants to use the TE position as a core part of the passing game then it's quietly actually a huge need. Every TE on pur roster is a guy who should be competing for a backup spot at most and honestly probably just simply fighting to hang onto a roster spot and a paycheck.

Safety makes perfect sense if he's a great one. We've made do with scrubs at that position for far too long.

    • It should be a facto, because while he needs to perform to keep his job, you still have to build with an eye to the future. Where we will be drafting, there is a more than good chance of there being a player there at a position of more need, such as OT, LB, TE, S, or CB. With all those holes, I just don’t like the idea of taking a player who will ensure one of him, T-Mac, or Coker won’t be here 4 years from now, and we all know it won’t be T-Mac who gets jettisoned. So either believe in Coker or don’t, keep him and draft another position or draft a WR and trade him, don’t straddle the middle and hamstring us by leaving more holes while leaving us a huge problem a couple years from now.
    • Oh, now we are "top half?" Keep moving the goal posts. No we aren't. We don't have a surefire WR2, nor do we have a TE that we can count on to consistently make big plays. Our receiving corps is somewhat bland to be honest. It does not have enough juice. Add another playmaker, then we'll likely be top half. Our receiving corps ranked somewhere between 20 and 25 in the league depending upon who you look at. No one has us in the top half based upon last season.
    • It is hard to say--if you look back at our roster from 4 years ago...In addition, we have a ton of money going into our OL right now (which might strengthen the argument to draft a tackle now)  The average NFL career is under 4 years, but the average NFL career for first rounders is 9.3 years, so most get 2 contracts.   So having said that, I look at it as capital--if your concern (legit) becomes an issue, then you should have the same vision and trade that player and draft his replacement.  However, TMAC, Coker, and a rookie is not likely to be a problem for another 4 years--2030.   But to your point, we have a situation right now that the OL has 2 guards and a RT around or over 30.  The make about $70m per year.   I like the perspective of reality you bring, however.  Is that a factor to morgan in 2026?
