Will Lee fits the Panthers’ prototype at corner, which is to say he’s long. Lee doesn’t have blazing speed, but his big wingspan helped him get his hands on a lot of balls. 
Lee was known as “The Blanket” in junior college, but he was hit or miss in coverage in three FBS seasons.

My 2 cents if he pans out I think this might solve 3 issues. I believe they were thinking of moving csw to fs ( I still want to see ransom with more pt.) So lee can possibly take nickel and if he pans out he can move up to m Jackson's spot when he's gone next year ( but we'd need another nickel back)

A lot of ifs and hope but I think that's the reasoning for this pick

Not every pick has to slot into an immediate starting role. Depth at cornerback is critical, and he may be able to become a future starter there.
