Trevin Wallace - One Final Shot...or is Cherelus someone to watch?

Recommended Posts

Linebacker is one of the hardest positions to adapt to in the NFL. Most don’t hit their stride until the tail end of their rookie contracts. Look no further than Devin Lloyd, highly drafted and didn’t really breakout until last season. I am on the fence about Trevin he definitely is still adapting to NFL speed. But honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see him be a solid starter next season with upside going forward. Keep in mind he’s only 23 currently, his best ball is coming up. He was insanely raw coming out of college, one positive undeniably is he has a true LB mentality he’s high energy and loves to hit you can’t teach grit.

That’s fair but that best ball needs to come up right out of the gate. He hasn’t cut it so far.

To people saying he isn’t slow, maybe not but he plays slow. I always see him around the pile not at the bottom of it. He is late getting to the ball, or has been.

I hope being around Lloyd helps him and not having the green dot definitely won’t hurt him.

Might wanna be worried about a Kuwatch

I prefer to have zero expectations for a 7th but we'll see.  In the past handful+ years, there's not much notable guys at LB outside of maybe Zaire Franklin & Kaeden Ellis when you're talking that late.

Him being our leader was never going to happen… he was put in a position to fail

signing Lloyd should do wonders for him. Takes the pressure off to be “the guy” and lets him make mistakes that won’t kill us.

too early to give up on him. He’s shown flashes. Was never going to be polished in year 2.

Yeah I would've loved to upgrade him, but it wasn't in the cards.

I mean, all things considered you could do worse for what, your 9th best defender on the field at any given time? He doesn't have to be a star, just be solid and have a nice play here or there.

And then...replace him next year.

We all know that he fell because of where he played and only one year of experience, but I think he's a sleeper and if he can take good coaching he might surprise us.  The only thing that will hold him back is EVERO.  Evero is not much on playing rookies.  He's going to have to play Hunter but after that I would not be surprised if we don't see many of our defensive rookies play.

Evero definitely irks me. Its bad enough im not the biggest fan of his scheme, but yes its gonna take a lot for him to play young players. They pretty much have to show out every chance like scourton did.

He had to be forced to play Scourton. I can easily see him not starting Hunter

Same here.  It's frustrating to see veterans that are on the downslope get more reps than the young guys. IMO he should have given Ransom more PT.  He seems to be a playmaker and I just didn't see much of him last year.

The only way you are going to improve is to get PT.  His lack of faith in a rookie is irritating.

I was really hoping we'd get a new starting ILB in the draft, but it didn't fall that way. No doubt having Devin Lloyd will help a ton, but I don't have much faith in Trevin Wallace at this point.

Not as a starter of course but the guy we picked up in the 7th is he a Mike or a Sam?

Hes still awful young, but like BY its time to show if you are an NFL starter or time for someone else too.

Lloyd is key, whoever bonds with him wins the job.

I believe the panther should allow a real open comp for the starting spot next to lloyd, even the 7th round dude, get him some snaps after a couple weeks of pre-work.

The league/panthers doesn't value ILB, good ones are cut each year. Dan could easily put in a claim or trade a 6th for a good one. (some double talk given that bag Lloyd got).

Much like RB, bring what you got into OTAs, mini, and mid-point TC you got to make a decision. Of course Id like another all-pro ILB, but one of 8 ILB can win the job if Wallace is the top competition.

I'd actually like to see Cherelus get a fair shot to win the job in camp. Wallace is decent in drop zone coverage, but he gets abused in the play action game and is often times out of position in the run game. It might just be me, but I swear every time I watch Wallace play, I see multiple plays a game were it looks like he's just trying to be blocked. Watching Cherelus last year he at least looked like he was trying to hit someone on every play. Wallace plays like a LB who doesn't trust what he sees and it makes him passive and cautious versus Cherelus who regardless of if his decision is right or wrong goes at it 100%.
