KC Joyner: Mallett is #1 QB Prospect in draft

From an ESPN Insider article comparing Mallett to Gabbert... http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2011/insider/columns/story?columnist=joyner_kc&id=6229004

In the end, it comes down to this.

Gabbert has the physical tools necessary to succeed in the NFL but he has a long history of working in a dink-and-dunk offense and isn't good at adjusting to in-game surprises. A team will either have to retool its system around his current limitations or wait for him to retool his skill set to an NFL-style system.

Mallett, on the other hand, has shown that he is capable of operating a vertical-based NFL offense right out of the gate. His combination of size, long pass ability and a willingness to take chances in the vertical game are very reminiscent of Ben Roethlisberger.

That day one readiness is why Mallett should be considered a better pro prospect than Gabbert.

Also, KC Joyner really does not like Cam Newton as a prospect, before anyone asks.

In breaking down the numbers he used ("good" teams they each played), I found a few things interesting:

1) Gabbert had a completion rating of 63% on balls between 20-29 yards, but as a percentage of his total passes thrown, he threw very few. He also did not complete any 30+ yard throws. Mallett completed 48% of balls between 20 an 29 yards but also completed 40% of his throws >30 yards and threw more deep balls than Gabbert.

2) Gabbert threw 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in the 4 games examined compared to 9 touchdowns and 6 interceptions for Mallett.

3) He thinks both Mallett and Gabbert had good footwork for college players, but Mallett's rapidly deteriorates outside the pocket but Gabbert still moves well.

4) He thinks when Mallett breaks the pocket, though he is not athletic at all, the problems with his throwing motion while moving are fixable and not what he calls "enitre body of mechanics out of whack" like he says of Newton.

He basically draws his conclusions because even though Mallett was not at all accurate in the vertical passing game (48% on throws>11 yards, compared to 58% for Gabbert) he was more productive with them.

With the right talent and coaching around him, Mallett could do well in the NFL. It's hard to factor in his off the field antic's because some much of the info is rumor's. If he had been arrested for drug's that would be one thing, as far as I know that has'nt happened, until then it's rumor's. He's got some upside, I'am sure Hurney or someone will take a look at him. Beyond that, who know's.

Mallet's feet are so heavy. He'll need 5 pro-bowlers on the o-line to be a successful starting QB.
Yeah, cause Peyton Manning and Brady need that same kind of protection..right? right?

Please, stop making out his 40 yard dash time out to be more than it is.

He is a pocket passer, not a running back, or wide receiver. Do you people even know the difference between the positions and skill sets?

Err have you ever seen Manning/Brady play fella? They both have very light feet and are very nimble in the pocket. Mallet is the opposite.

LOL, actually yes, Manning and Brady both play behind pro-bowl linemen.

    • Not sure who said it first, but Tepper is the correct answer. Still, I'm gonna go with Kasay keeping it inbounds. If, you subscribe to the butterfly effect version of time travel consequences.... When we win SBXXXVIII everybody's lives change: Moose never breaks his leg, We win it all again in 05. Tommy Jone is unknown and Peppers stays home, Champs once more 2008. No artificial pig heart turning JR into a creepy weirdo, no lockout, no Clausen. Fox and Jake ride off into the sunset on their own terms. No 2-14, no #1 pick. But, no laptop, no Blinn, 3 years behind The Golden Calf of Bristol, we still get Cam. JR let's him grow his locs like he always wanted, Smitty sees Cam in a new light. Dreads swinging, (and Smitty with his 3 Lombardis behind him) Cam is old enough to get those calls. No Manning narrative, Cotchery TD, PI against Talib on Philly Brown, 10,000 RTP calls and Kony Ealy SB50 MVP. No Jeans Fridays, no Tepper. KB doesn't slip on his own meatsweat mid-route in SD, Cam becomes the 1st QB to win 10 straight SBs. Retiring after being elected 47th president of the US of A, Cam ushers in the Permanent Proletarian Revolution across the globe, Xi Jinping bows in awe. "ẄøŘƙƐṛ§ őF ŧĤə ŵØRłð, ŮŊÏŦƐ!!!"
    • Yeah your right the owner was copping hand shandies while all this was going down
    • I mean not surprised the Patriots took him in and aren't trying to push him out. They've been the most morally bankrupt team in the NFL for a long while. Wouldn't be surprised if Vrabel has his own dirt on Kraft/Brady and other assholes from that organization over the last couple decades.
