Believe The Hype by Gil Brandt

There have been a lot of negatives tossed around lately when it comes to Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, and it’s understandable that NFL teams must perform their due diligence to learn everything they can about him if they are considering drafting the Heisman Trophy winner next month. I’ve talked to a lot of players and coaches who were around Newton at Auburn, people whose opinions I trust, and I’ve come to this conclusion: Newton is the real deal.

more and more, it seems like a lot of the NFL.com guys are coming to the point where they think both of Newton and Gabbert are great QBs and they think they can both do well.

I get that same vibe...Gil Brandt said in his chat that as far as the best QBs in the draft he says he labels them #1 and #1a

I think both need to be in a particular type of offense...I could see Gabbert do well with Arizona and I think Newton is a good fit for us or Buffalo.

IIRC Chan Gailey and Mike Miller both run the Erhardt-Perkins offense, so I don't get why you think one would work in ARI and not in BUF, or vice versa.

Read the whole article..... sounds good to me. I escpecially liked this part:

.............when Newton arrived on campus in the winter of 2010, he did not do what many young student-athletes do at Auburn – that is, he did not take off on weekends to hang out in Atlanta or Birmingham. Newton stayed on campus to work out on weekends. After a while, his teammates gravitated toward him and started rallying around him. “If the quarterback was sticking around to work, why shouldn’t we?” This was a turning point, a sign that Newton had the work habits and the best interest of his team at heart. Talent alone didn’t win Auburn the national championship. Newton’s leadership off the field played a key role.

I am all for Cam being picked #1.

That's the thing, if you draft Cam he's not going to play like Bradford his first year... you're drafting him with the idea that it will take a few years for him to get up to speed which is the way folks used to draft QB's.

It's risky, but I can live with drafting Cam # 1 overall simply because he has SO MUCH potential.
