King: Cam Newton costing Hurney sleep

cam-newton-marty-hurney.jpg

Sports Illustrated's Peter King has known Marty Hurney since they both were sportswriters covering the NFC East in the 1980s, and while he says they were never friends, he suspects his old sportswriting peer isn't sleeping well these days.

That's because Hurney is picking first in a draft with no clear No. 1 pick. And Hurney has a perceived need at quarterback, where Cam Newton is both tantalizing and dangerous.

As King points out, the pay is good to be an NFL general manager. Hurney is earning his this week. And he's probably anxious for Thursday to get here. It remains to be seen if he'll sleep better afterward.

. He knows he's not at his best on the board or in the film room -- he didn't need the Gruden TV show to tell him that... Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/peter_king/04/24/mmqb/index.html#ixzz1KXw7qDa7

Sounds like all of us saying Newton would only be picked by the Panthers if he impressed in interviews when it came to the playbook etc might have been wrong... Or, hopefully, King is just speculating.

Hurney knows Newton walked into a junior college in Texas in 2009 and convinced a team of total strangers to follow him, and the team won the national JC title, and he knows Newton walked into Auburn in 2010 and convinced a team of total strangers to follow him, and the team won a national college championship

Some people are natural leaders and winners when it comes to this game.......it is written all over this kid.

If you are losing sleep over a player that is a sign that he isn't the right player for the #1 overall pick. That pick MUST be a slam dunk!

I am glad I don't have to make the decision.

ask the GM who was trying to decide between Manning and Ryan Leaf (for the first pick) how much sleep he lost.

    • Winning games and be a +500 team are good. But the goal is to win Super Bowl.  Chiefs had Alex Smith, went to playoff twice and still replaced him.   BY as of now: - To many fumbles - Completion in the intermediate range is just far below acceptable - Not enough of a deep throw threat....   The stats you try use is deceiving.  Catchable......  That is an opinion. Show me the completion %. And also, how does BY compare to other QBs using the stats you cited. Oh... ranked at 27

    • The Entitlement Paradox: When Winning Isn't Enough for Panther fans.    Just the other season(s) we were praying for wins by any means. Brought in every run of the mill QB you could think of.  We know all sides of the ball was bad like egregious bad. However some how we have won 5 games and TOXIC ENTITLEMENT has emerged.    We are a team that has to take wins by anymeans nothing has changed. Keep pounding means it aint gonna be perfect!!    Some panther fans have now developed a toxic entitlement where even victories feel insufficient, demanding flawless performance, or perfection, which stems from historical success in which we dont have any lol. This mindset poisons communities by fostering relentless criticism, harassment, and ingratitude that undermine team morale and alienate casual supporters. For the new Carolina Panthers, this could manifest as fans booing Bryce Young after gritty wins for low passing yards despite low turnovers, pressuring tepper into premature changes mid-rebuild, or driving away talent through online abuse!! eroding the positive momentum from their recent 4-game streak has brought us. Trust and believe the players do see your toxicity.    Anyways here are some positive stats.      Most Accurate QB on... 20+ Yard Throws 1. Drake Maye (79.2%) 2. Sam Darnold (79.2%) 3. Bryce Young (75.0%) 10-19 Yard Throws 1. Jaxson Dart (88.0%) 2. Jayden Daniels (82.9%) 3. Drake Maye (80.7%) 0-9 Yard Throws 1. Drake Maye (92.9%) 2. Spencer Rattler (92.6%) 3. Bryce Young (91.7%) @FantasyPtsData
