NFLPA to permanantly decertify? It was Upshaws plan...

Continuing with the theme of this fantastic offseason.

Smith, however, insists that he has embraced decertification as an enduring state of existence, much in the same way that Upshaw did in the early ’90s before – at the NFL’s insistence – he agreed to re-form the union. In an interview with Y! Sports earlier this month, Smith revealed that he envisions navigating the NFLPA through a union-free future, even after a possible settlement of the Brady et al antitrust lawsuit and a new contractual agreement between players and owners.

“I’ve come full circle,” Smith said as he sat in a downtown Bethesda plaza, a few miles from the NFLPA’s Washington D.C. headquarters, on a sunny spring morning. “When I went into this, my attitude was that the only way you have power is collectively, and I believed in unions as vehicles for employees asserting their rights. But looking back on what Gene experienced and understanding this particular situation, I’ve now come to appreciate the value of decertification in our particular circumstance. And I don’t see why we’d want to go back to being a union.”

Actually I think the NFLPA's position is to to try and use litigation to scrap the whole system and end the draft, limitations on teams keeping players, and allowing all players to go anywhere they want. I personally think it will be a disaster but from the player's point of view and simply giving them more money, it makes sense. The fact that the league won't do as well and parity will be totally blown doesn't seem like a concern of their's based on the Brady lawsuit and similar ones at this point. I don't think they will win but from al indications that is where they seem to be heading towards.

I swear to god if this happens and I gotta watch a NY-DAL superbowl every year I will quit watching football. No more ticket purchases, no more Sunday ticket renewal, no more apparel and memorabilia, no more madden. Multiply that by probably 10 million other people, and the revenue accrued that's used to pay these guys will take a serious hit.

i want to say that would kill the NFL, but i know better. it wouldn't be as popular, but the majority of fans will keep watching just because its the NFL.

i know i'd quit watching. guess thats all that matters.

This is exactly why them doing this would be killing the goose who lays the golden eggs.

The NFL has steadily risen in popularity EXACTLY because they've taken measures to maintain parity and give small market teams opportunities to compete with large market teams.

Kill that goose and it will all be over. TV ratings will drop and that will cause revenue to DRASTICALLY decrease.

only problem is the courts don't care what's best for the league. the courts don't care about parity. they don't care what viewers do. if smith can make a better argument or find a sympathetic judge then we could very well see the end of what we know as the NFL.

what would happen, though, is that congress would get involved and then the president. you may think i'm joking, but it would happen. they love mingling if they think it can win them votes. don't matter if they are democrat or republican. they can't help but get their fingers in the pot and waste tax payer money.
