Did we misuse money on DeAngelo Williams?

I am not saying Williams is not worth the money or he is to blame because the running game is stagnant. But what I am saying is maybe not worth the money in this system. We already had JStew under contract and could have used DeAngelo's money on say a CB.

Love DeAngelo, just wonder if the money could have been more wisely used in places of need.

If we had gotten off to a hot start rushing you guys wouldn't even be asking these questions. Damn this fanbase is so fickle. We NEEDED both our runningbacks, a duo of Stewart and Goodson does not get it done.

When the ground game gets going, your fickle asses will be singing "double trouble's" praises again. BOOK IT (in my best Skip Bayless voice)!

I hope to God I am wrong about him and he's worth every bit of his $43 million. I beg him to prove the naysayers wrong.

It's not production, it's usage.

You don't pay a guy 40 million to let him split time 50/50 with his backup. If the backup is that good then save the money and give him the bulk of the carries. Its not even a matter of if Deangelo is worth the money or not (for the record I think his talent and playmaking ability IS worth the money). The issue is that so far we haven't tried to establish a run partly becuase Newton has been that good and partly becuase the OL has been that bad. If the OL continues to suck then it'll be money wasted. If the OL gets it together then it'll be money well-spent because when it comes to finding a hole Deangelo has shown he's one of the best in the league.

So in short...We should have just split the carries between Stewart, Goodson and Sutton and spent that money on a corner b/c I don't see the OL getting any better.

I was one of the many who were glad to have him back, but after these past 2 games, I feel we misused the money on him. He doesnt seem to fit this offense very well.

I just hope this doesnt come back and bite us when its time to resign Stew. We NEED him, and hopefully we have the money to retain him.

Our run game typically starts slow. It will pick up. Especially when teams start pulling back in coverage due to Newton

in today's NFL.....the only way to beat the great QBs is to get to them as well (teams don't just bring absurd heat at rookies). Look at the GB/NO game to open up the season. Great QBs with time.....can pick apart teams playing coverage.

The Williams contract based on the way our backfield is built was a signing that juts doesn't fit with what the league has turned into.....especially with Fox gone and our backfield already being more than sufficient. The problem w/ a stacked backfield is talent is always wasted on the sideline. No way for Williams to be worth the move......and that has little to do w/ his talent.

Williams being re-signed was the right move imo, rookie QB's do NOT come in the league and blow up like Newton has done. Double Trouble was intended to be used as a security blanket till Cam progresses as a QB. He was a project coming out of college and no one predicted him to play at the caliber he has been.

Both Dwill and Jstew are knicked up occasionally, and could go down at any time this season. If we let Dwill walk for nothing and Jstew somehow gets unlucky and his season was ended via injury; we would be stuck with goodson being our feature back and tbh he just isn't reliable enough for that role.

We should all be grateful for having the depth we do at RB and for Cam starting the season off like he has. Like I said Cam's amazing performance was completely unexpected, and if he has a few off weeks then we know from previous seasons double trouble can carry this team and keep us in games off the ground game alone, give the team time to gel and become more balanced , before calling for our core players heads because of lack of production.

First of all with all these injuries going around who knows what will happen to Goodson and Stewart at this point. I remember folks saying we needed to get rid of Connor a few months ago. How did that turn out??

Secondly Williams by season's end will likely have as many yards receiving as he will rushing. Honestly I don't care if he has 300 yards rushing and 500 yards receiving as long as he get 800 yards. Why won't he and Stewart get 1000 yards each this year?? With the increased passing game and actual use of tight ends to catch, we are spreading out the ball more. Right now Smith and the tight ends are getting the yards the running backs were getting in 2009. It doesn't mean they aren't valuable simply are being used differently. Lets see what happens when teams figure out blitzing Cam and putting 8 in the box is not working.

    • The division is most certainly wide open. The Bucs are a problem but Baker Mayfield is and will remain his own worst enemy it's a matter of when not if he has a bad game or even a stretch of bad games. As far as the Panthers they have done an admirable job of trying to address needs as best they can without pulling a Scott Fitterer and getting desperate which has only made us worse off in the past. On the Bryce subject all anyone can really say at this point is we just have to wait and see. This is the year and despite what the Panthers may say publicly doubling down and going all in on WR is as good as any sign anyone should need that they expect Bryce Young to have a very productive and convincing season. The pieces are in place. They aren't perfect but nothing ever will be. Regardless there's honestly no excuse for this staff and this team not to be able to compete in this iteration of the NFC South. Also just want to say this because I can say the hyper defensive posts already being made in here and it's probably going to be a season with highs and lows again but hopefully more highs for sure. But just because there is dialogue about a position group or a player that challenges your preconceived notions or makes you uncomfortable does not make it "hate" or "anti" this player or that player. For some people who talk a lot about nuance you would think this wouldn't need to be stated but that's where we're at.
    • If I was a coach I would preach "Don't let the refs decide the game" because as soon as you let the NFL the chance to help their bottom dollar whether it be teams that make most money or gambling then they will screw the team that doesn't fit their bottom line......is it rigged? No but do they try and make certain narratives happen abso-freakin-lutley. As I stated in a previous thread NFL players are the ones that SHOULD have all guaranteed contracts but the boot lickers on this forum disagree and argue for the billionaires in this world who own these teams, sheep
    • I wont go quite so far as to say games are rigged.  You wouldnt have to work hard to convince me there was the occasional thumb on the scale but outright rigged? nah.   but collusion on the rest of the "business" of football, sure.  No one really believes that the only time the 32 owners act as one is during the negotiations of the CBA do they?
