A bit annoyed with #89

I don't know if a hold can be considered a bone-headed penalty really. Id consider excessive celebration or a personal foul to be bone-headed. I don't think Smitty has made that many bone-headed penalties this year.

Of course 1 is too many depending on when it comes, and considering how close our games are they all count. (sounds like I'm making your case :leaving: )

They're random occurrences in a down year. Sometimes it's really hard to make things to go your way.

Also, what's the point in saying he is the type of player that makes mistakes but also makes up for them? Doesn't that summarize just about every player worth calling good? That's what separates good players from bad.

That PI call was one that a lot of receivers get away with. Bigger guys probably get away with it more since they are bigger and thus "incidental" contact is more likely. I honestly don't think his push was very much, he was looking at the ball and shielded himself from the DB running into him but he probably could have made the catch without the push.

That probably would've put him over 100. I also like the ballsiness of the call. Cam hadn't gone deep all game and they went for it all on a critical 3rd down. I love the experience they are getting in these situations. Definitely not the typical 3rd down draw from good ole fox.

The holding that called back cam's game winning TD was legit...really dumb play on the opposite side of the field.

no it wasn't.

it isn't holding when a player braces in anticipation of contact

otherwise, everette brown would've drawn holding flags every time he spun.

the PI was a weak call, should have been a non-call, but it was still an obvious push-off. the DB sold it good enough.

my problem with smitty is that he doesn't knock down uncatchable balls. he smacks them up in the air... weren't several of jake's picks in the playoff game against arizona the result of tipped passes?

smitty's like captain munnerlyn in that he's undersized at his position, abnormally so, and he makes up for it with physicality and toughness. unfortunately that can lead to more penalties than a guy who's naturally built for the position might get because he can rely on height.

Nope a result of Jake having to payoff his horse gambling debts.

Smitty's always been really prone to holding down the field on runs and pushing off while the ball is in the air. He's just been getting caught more recently, that's all.

That is a good point but I have a slightly different take on it. Holding calls seems to be arbitrary at times. Players seem to hold on every play but sometimes they are called, other times they are not. So as a player you feel that you never know when you crossed the line since the calls are often not consistent. You never know when you are going to be called but since most players do it, he does it as well. Seems that when the play is right next to him he gets called, other times he gets away with it as do others.

On the other hand he is so very competitve that he forgets that winning the battle with a receiver isn't the point if you lose the war when he gets called for the penalty. It is something you have to live with when you have a guy who is so competitve, though.

Smitty has always had that "bad" side that makes costly mistakes, its nothing new. Remember the Dallas game where he touched the ref and got tossed?

More excuses for Smitty from the huddle. Panthro is spot on and I think Smitty himself would agree, I doubt he'd give any other reason other than being mistakes. He needs to concentrate and not make stupid mistakes, more is expected of him. I do think it's great that he has that fire back though and for Smitty that may mean these types of calls. There are elite receivers who don't draw the penalties and no one should be excused for stupid mistakes.

    • Sorry man you lost me at "Teppers have evolved as owners". Limped into playoffs at 8-9 not even above .500 Tepper is trash as an owner bro and that's not even a discussion at this point. 37-83 w/l ratio. Nuff said.... Morgan tho, he's cooking and it ain't cuz of Teppers leadership
    • After listening to Morgan's presser twice, I came away with some key beliefs. First of all, I don't think he's a bullshitter. What you see is what you get. When he says something, he means it.  The Teppers really have evolved as owners. Morgan has mentioned how they're easy to work with--a pleasure to work with a few times now. There seems to be a good relationship between all of them (and include Dave Canales on that). We'll see if it lasts. Yes, no one wanted to come to Carolina with the previous management, but that seems to have changed. The team signed arguably the top Edge, LB and OT on the market, two of them on pretty good deals and one on what I'll say is "not a bad one." And, credit Sunshine Dave "Flowers and Cotton Candy" Canales for helping to change the culture. Morgan mentioned getting guys--and I'm paraphrasing--that are not only great football players but great people. Don't look for us to be acquiring any James Pearce types anytime soon, just saying. We'll see if that holds true in the future. Dan Morgan really has set up the Panthers to take the BPA/BAP. He mentioned it at least a couple of times, and he doesn't seem pressured to pinpoint a particular position. He just wants quality players that will help the team. This is how it's going to be (to your joy or dismay, probably for as long as he's here), and personally I love it. Many of us know how Morgan was when he played: aggressive! That's what he's going to be when making acquisitions. He explicitly said it, and emphasized it. All avenues are open (think FA, waivers...the draft)! Personally, as long as it's controlled aggression and not reckless aggression, I love it.  On KP: "Mobility is big in this league."  He basically says if another QB is the BPA while drafting--we're going by our board, people--we're going to add them.        ...
    • Canes are so fascinating. Despite inconsistent defense and poor goalie play they keep winning.
