Football 101 - For Newbies

As one who loves football, but doesn't always understand the x and o's matchups; is there anything the more knowledgeable posters can tell me about the keys to winning this game with Atlanta.

Key players, suggested plays, i.e. numbers to watch.

Looking for game winning strategy, not "if we can stop michael turner from getting 1000 yards we might win."

No bitchassness!

Here's one matchup to watch for:

Julio Jones #11 vs. Captain Munnerlyn #41

Gamble will draw Roddy White most of the time, since he still plays their #1 WR position, which leaves Captain unfortunately overmatched against a dynamic rookie receiver. Hopefully Godfrey and Martin will be able to provide decent help over the top.

Capt has faced far better WRs this year and came out on top. You are going to see a lot of cover 2 deep and zone blitzing. This game comes down to who can put up the most points cause both defenses suck

We stacked the box all game, we can't do that with Matt Ryan.

Exactly. This game we are gonna need Martin over the top to help Cap. And Godfrey is going to be one on one with Gonzalez since our linebackers would be even more of a mismatch against him.

So on defense this game comes down to our D line being able to fill the gaps so our linebackers can wrap up Turner... and obviously our linebackers cannot miss tackles (since we cannot load the box). This and Gamble is probably not going to get much help on Roddy, so he's gonna have to bring it (like he has all season)... Lastly, Cap/Martin and Godfrey have to stop Julio and Gonzales enough so our offense can put up more points than Atl (its unrealistic to expect them to have a lot of success in these two matchups, teh most important thing is to not give up any big plays, and play especially hard on third downs to stop drives)

Offensively, it all comes down to giving Cam time. They will probably be spying on Cam (so that takes one LB out of coverage making things a little easier for Cam to throw the ball). Our WRs (and TEs) are more talented than the Falcons secondary and LB, so if Cam gets his time, we should have no problem keeping our offense rolling. So, our Tackles have to do a good job against Abraham and Edwards, and we HAVE TO HAVE TO establish the run so Atlanta is as blitz-happy (I'm not too confident in our ability to pick up the blitz) and to let Olsen slip out for the big play (on a play action).

    • Rags lost again. All is right in the hockey world.
    • He’s responsible for two drafts classes. The first was one of the worst drafts I’ve ever seem. The second one is showing a ton of promise. I’m somewhere between skeptical and hopeful on Morgan.
    • I'm a big fan of Dan. His ability to find productive players deep in the draft will pay off.  I'm going to give him 1.5 draft classes right now, because I do think it's a little unfair to evaluate his first year when he got the job in January, especially when we went into that draft not having a first round pick.  XL and Brooks are still big time TBD players. Both still have incredibly high ceilings, but both have also given us legitimate reasons to have a lot of pause. Trevin Wallace, Chau Smith Wade and Jatavion Sanders have IMO outplayed their draft position early in their careers. That's a great thing. He also got Coker and Demani Richardson as UDFAs that year. Given the situation we were in, I really don't mind the gamble on the high ceiling guys. Still may work out, still may not, but if you made a checklist of ideal situation for an NFL GM to walk into, ours was near the bottom of that list.  Every single 2025 pick is contributing in some way. That typically doesn't happen. I am absolutely blown away by this draft class 6 games in. Even the best GM's miss on occasion, and we can't expect Dan to be 100% on drafts moving forward. Ryan Fitzgerald was an excellent find as well.  Comparing our last two drafts to the previous few is pretty shocking. Can you imagine this season without our Rookies? It would not be good. Additionally, this roster only has 6 players with more than 6 years of experience, and two of those are specialist.  The next step is equally important, and still very much TBD. We have to avoid Cap Chaos.
