Where will Peyton Manning QB in 2012?

Based on what I was hearing on NFL Network, the Colts are likely to keep him if the medical checks out. If not, he is gone. However, if the medical does not check out, he will retire.

Just what I think....which is worth poo.

If he does check out and the Colts do in fact take him back...something very interesting could unravel:

If they get to know that Manning's checks out and is his same old self...I could definitely see them being open to trades at the top but also still fine with taking Luck. Either way, it would be interesting to see because if Irsay learned one thing last year: its that you have to have a team not just a QB.

The ultimate tangled web:

$28 million bonus due to him on March 8th. Pay him or release him. No other choice.

Colts can NOT trade him until the start of the new NFL year (March 15th).

Manning could delay his bonus date to March 15th but he says he will not.

Doctors are not sure they can give a final prognosis on his neck by March 8th.

So, pay the man without a final medical prognosis or release him and risk another team picking him up if he turns out to be healthy for football.

What if the Colts come to Manning and tell him they arent going to pay the bonus and plan on cutting him? I think he would change his mind and delay the bonus so the Colts can trade him and he can get paid.

Of course this is all me speculating. I just dont see Peyton retiring if he is able to play, even if it means a small risk of a more serious injury. The guy has lived and breathed football for his entire life, you know he is a competitive guy who would love to hold every major QB record.

According to these articles:

Having Payton and Luck on the field next year will put about 50million in QBs on their cap next year

the Colts exercise the option and also select Luck with the top pick in the Draft, they will be committing over $50 million for the quarterback position in 2012. While Luck’s overall compensation will "only" be approximately $23 million over four years, he will receive a signing bonus and salary of more than $15 million in the first year of his deal. That is an untenable amount of money for that position, especially when the Colts paid over $32 million at quarterback in 2011.

Payton gets the 28 mill and his contracted salary of 7.4 next year.

Payton "cant" grant them an extension

As to moving the date, the CBA prevents renegotiations of contracts following the last regular season game of the League Year within which the date is in. The March 8th date is in the 2011 League Year, as the 2012 League Year begins on March 13th.
My money is on Isray letting Payton walk.

And then Miami swoops in and pays him three truckloads of 100 dollar bills.

I bet Irsay actually wants him gone but Peyton would rather stay and restructure.

He's being way needy for Luck as the savior and wants to completely hit the refresh button at once. We took a two to three year plan here to build a potentially dominant franchise.

If I was there, I'd probably keep and restructure Peyton, then trade down and draft a great group this year. Go after some talent make a defense out of Indy. Then if Peyton plays well, keep him. Maybe 1 or 2 years down the road the Colts could use him for a trade up for a top QB again. I dunno, I just think Luck is gonna be a solid QB a la Matt Ryan/Flacco and nothing that spectacular but great if you have a team around him.

If he learned anything from this past year fiasco, Irsay would go and grab talent to build a team...not just rely on one QB.

    • Yeah I find myself flipping between the worst case scenario of Bryce either playing just mediocre enough for our decision makers to justify giving him a contract extension in their eyes because they want to justify drafting him. Or Bryce going back to playing poorly and us having no one else to fall back on because Pickett might be decent for one or two games but there's no one else and our locker room starts to get ugly because we went all in with our salary cap and guys careers are on the line. This scenario which IMO is the higher probability given our schedule and the amount of tape out there on Bryce is why I say if we can trade down and acquire a few more mid or late round picks we should draft a developmental QB. Not looking for a guy to be the savior but someone with the necessary physical tools and who could actually run a QB sneak. But we'll just have to see how it shakes out. I just want a competitive team but the last thing I want is the season to fall apart because we once again threw our arms up in regards to the QB room.
    • ^This. Rico was dynamite when we needed it last season, but not enough to keep but it massively upped his earning potential. It was a win-win for both sides. And he was there to cover the hole left by the injury to another RB, and hopefully his release to free agency means there's good news for us on the way. These new ones give us the opportunity to do that again, on the offensive line and elsewhere. We've got some long term question marks here and there due to injuries and age, and these players have a chance to up their value on the open market or settle down with us if the opportunity arises. And none of it ties us down with dead money down the road if it doesn't work out. And we've been in dead money hell for a decade now. Lease the ones you like, buy if you fall in love.
