Antonio Garay on Boomer and Carton this AM..

Garray would be nice...if we didn't already essentially have him in Ron Edwards.
seems like garay is more of a UT in a NT's body. they are pretty different. edwards is more of the run stuffer/lane clogger while garay seems to be the guy who can put pressure on the QB. in fact he was one of the best DTs at getting pressure on the QB the last couple years. he's kind of like a jay ratliff type NT who can get to the QB regularly. not just a run stuffer or a guy that eats up blockers. he penetrates gaps and gets to the QB.

In 2010, Garay finally won a starting job. He played NT for the Chargers for the entire year, racking up 48 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He kept his job in 2011, chipping in 57 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

Our friends at Pro Football Focus graded Garay at +4.0 overall on the 2011 season. He received a +1.5 run defense grade and a +7.3 pass rushing grade. PFF also credited him for three sacks, six QB hits and 20 QB pressures. He missed four tackles on the season and was credited for 23 stops.

in 2010 (with rivera) he had an even better year. he had 5.5 sacks and twice as many QB pressures as he had in '11.

of all the DL in '10 that had more than 40 tackles, garay was one of four (along with jared allen, vince wilfork, and sione pouha) with no broken tackles.

btw...i'm thinking we need some of this guy's attitude and flair on D.

If he's cheap it doesn't matter. Low risk

the way it sounds the market and demand for him was going to be pretty small anyway. no one is expecting him to be all that expensive. it sounds like he just wants an opportunity to start or at least get a lot of PT and a legit shot at starting. he also sounds like he really wants to get back with rivera so he'd probably be pretty agreeable to any respectable contract offer. he's not someone that will require us breaking the bank for.

If it happens i think it would be a good thing. Honestly would much rather have Edwards and Garay starting for us than our young guys or even our number 1 draft pick. Would love to concentrate our picks on upgrades for Capt, Sherrod and Hardy.

A decent pass rush would greatly improve the secondary IMO!! We got Hogan, he should be healthy too but he is more run stuffer than a coverage guy from what I have read bout him.

Sounds like Garay can get into back field and from the looks of him would invoke fear in the hearts of QB's every where!!!

Like rayzor said, Garray is more of a UT while Edwards is an NT, so they could compliment each other nicely.

McClain and/or Fua may turn out to be great, but right now they are still unknown commodities and the rest of the guys we have are at best decent rotational players, so we need to keep an eye out for a another vet like this to get us over the hump while we continue to develop our young guys. Even if we draft a DT with the # 9 pick, you have to give the kid at least a year to get a clue, so we need vets like Garray (at a reasonable price) to span the gap.

    • Canales is in the middle of the most critical point of his Panthers tenure: The 2nd half of the 2nd season. Looking back here is how the other head coaches performed to this point and how their time here pivoted. Dom Capers First 26 Games: 13-13 2nd Half of 2nd Season: (1996) won final 7 games to win division, took Panthers to NFC Championship Game. Final Record/Accomplishments: 30-34; NFC West Division Title-1996 George Seifert First 26 Games: 12-14 2nd Half of 2nd Season: (2000) Finished 3-3 with mixed results in games; finished 1-15 the following season. Final Record/Accomplishments: 16-32; None. John Fox First 26 Games: 15-11 2nd Half of 2nd Season: (2003) corrected the season after a strong start and mid-year stumble to win division, Won NFC Championship Game. Final Record/Accomplishments: 73-71; (1) Conference Championship; (3) Playoff Appearances; (2) Division Titles. Ron Rivera First 26 Games: 8-18 2nd Half of 2nd Season: (2012) Won 5/6 remaining games; finished 12-4 following season and won division. Final Record/Accomplishments: 76-63-1; (1) Conference Championship; (4) Playoff Appearances; (3) Division Titles; (2) COY Awards Matt Rhule First 26 Games: 10-16 2nd Half of 2nd Season: (2021) Lost final 7 games in a row, terminated 5 games into following season. Final Record/Accomplishments: 11-27; None. Dave Canales First 26 Games: 10-16 2nd Half of 2nd Season: TBD Final Record/Accomplishments: TBD The writing was on the wall at the end of Rhule and Seifert’s 2nd season, while Capers, Fox, and Rivera all finished strong and rallied. To be fair, Capers 1997 and 1998 seasons weren’t great, but he was faced with adversity and still managed to leave with at least one successful season...thanks to the second half of his 2nd season.
    • There are always a few head scratcher calls a game on us.  That was bshit
    • Honestly unless the Packers WR in the end zone was disqualified from tackling, he was literally right behind him ready to tackle him at the 5 yard line. Probably better he dropped it field position wise unless people think Mike Jack has Ted Ginn speed or something.
