Hurney: Wharton to be released

No, its march 13th, so no spreading it out over 2 years and the hit is 4 million, the savings us 3.7

What he's saying is that we designated Wharton as a June 1st cut in order to spread the cap hit out.

Look here...

Wharton was scheduled to count $7.6 million toward this year’s cap. The Panthers will have to absorb $3.6 million of that against the cap, but the June 1 designation allows them to spread that out over this year and next.

The only way I would want to get an OT in the first round is if we trade up and get Kalil (which is pretty ridiculous in itself). Anything else and I will be pissed, and that includes trade downs.

Reiff--short arms (see Sam Baker, Robert Gallery)

Martin--finesse and questions about his ability to anchor

Adams--inconsistent. Seems whenever I read about DEs, there is always a comment about how the DE looked good vs. Adams.

But I think OL talent just shot up the "draft need" meter. A OT is very possible now.

I just don't see it happening. We drafted Byron Bell last year who was respectable at RT. Move him inside to guard and give Otah a chance to prove he can stay healthy for an entire season. If he can't then draft an OT next year, then plug someone in at guard and move Bell back out to OT. We would essentially have the same caliber of line as we had last year. If he CAN stay healthy then you just drafted a top 10 tackle for what?? To sit the bench behind Otah and Gross for three years?? Or maybe you want to release a first round pick who was a mammoth the year he was healthy? Gotta let guys get healthy before you judge them again. Otah knows this is his last chance with the Panthers.

What we need to do is pick up a left guard in free agency to help Gross out so he doesn't get demolished all year. There is zero point in trying to overthink this draft. We aren't in a position where we can pass on elite talent at DL/CB because we think that we MIGHT need to replace Jordan Gross in a few years...it would be a ridiculously stupid move IMO.

I can't imagine cutting a starter at any position only to make it a priority draft need when we already have several. They have some kind of plan in place, or they're confident in who we have. Rivera is far too concerned with this defense to want to worry about not getting a quality defensive starter in the draft.

Ok

my bad, didnt realize we could use the june 1st designation in march. and I thought his contract was 7.7 million this year. And the cap hit was 4 million since he was guranteed 4 from what I read. Thank you for correcting me.

So If I understand this right we now have an extra 5.8(7.6-1.8 cap hit) million available this year thanks to cutting him. Am I finally comprehending this right?

If so that 5.8 should get go a long way in getting a good starter somewhere.

I honestly think Hurney does nothing. We'll draft a G in the 4th round, and say he'll have to battle in camp. They aren't going to spend any money. BUILDING THROUGH THE DRAFT LIKE WE ALWAYS DO, which has proven he has a great taste for talent dawg..............

Bell was not drafted and some thing he was overwhelmed at RT while others say he did fine. He had more penalty yards than I would like, usually holding. Watch Cameron Jordan in week 17 nearly kill Cam Newton. Bell will be a guard.

I am interested in knowing about Lee Ziemba. What was his deal and is he ready to play RT?

I think, with Cam being so valuable, we are foolish to not to address every single OL position with quality. Our defense is very young at every spot except LB--I am not so sure throwing more youth there is tne answer. I think we are going to sign a free agent LB or two--maybe a WR andor CB--in free agency. I see our OL as a spot needing an infusion of youth, so I would not be surprised to see DeCastro or Reiff at #9.

I think we are hoping Coples is there, and if he is, we will take him and draft OL in the second round.

Everyone wants to go overboard wth defense, but a few free agents wlll change that.
