we have had some poor play at safety, we have had some poor play all over the defense. safety happens to be a place where most tackles are in the open field and where most casual fans notice it the most. Also the name itself, :safety" is designed to be a stopgap. Chances are that the defense has been broken down already if the play lies solely on the safety to stop.

the thread is about a guy who might, MIGHT be better than what we have. Martin is not the worst safety in the league and Pugh is not a starter. I'm just laughing at how quickly you clowns pass judgement when A, you could never dream of doing better and B, its not even necessary to do so.

In short, its easy to pick out the football fans who don't know a whole hell of a lot about the game when they constantly pick out individuals as the problem on our defense and think making fun of individuals makes them look cool in a forum. Or even better, believe that an individual at safety could ever make a defense better all by himself.

maybe these kids can only see talent in the new guy after they have blown the shortcomings of the old guy completely out of proportion.

lots of dumb people do that. its pretty common among persons of below average intelligence.

There should be some good comp in camp and that is the only news here. There hasn't been for a few years now but this year looks different. I don't have a crystal ball like the hyper-critical armchair GM know-it-alls around here so I don't know how it will turn out but I am glad there will be competition.

A defense is a collection of individuals, would you agree? When certain individuals aren't playing well, it's likely that they will be blamed for being part of the problem.

If it was a requirement to be a better football player than an NFL player, then this forum nor any other NFL forum would exist.

We signed a couple of backups, and they are instantly considered starters by our fan base.

No doubt our safety play regressed last season.

Everybody in our secondary cept Gamble, regressed. That leads me to believe there was a bigger issue than just the safeties.

First year with a new defense, with no OTAs, no mini camps, shortened training camp.

That's a lot to over come without even mentioning the biggest problem, injuries destroying our front 7.

Seems to me, that most of you ignore that when talking about the horrid play from our secondary.

While I'm excited the is quality competition, I think the biggest impact is going to be from having time to implement the defense, with a new to us, secondary coach.

It wouldn't surprise me if our starting safeties don't change.

I still have expectations of improvement from our talented secondary.

the vehement vitriol leveled at players by our fans continues to out them as people who don't care to examine all the facts nor do they have any respect for he situation at hand. I guess they think that to draft a person means an existing person in the same position is automatically open to ridicule based on his lack of worth and all they need is to pull up a few screwups on youtube to fuel their cause. Pure comedy or sad reality? Both.

It gets more weird every year around here. By my observation these know-it-alls have replaced common sense with vehemence and think that what they lack in intelligence they can make up for in nastiness. Reminds me of rednecks who yell at Mexicans in effort to get their point across when the Mexican does not understand a word of English.
