ESPN Insider: Top RB Combos

Guess who's #1:

1. Carolina Panthers

(Jonathan Stewart, DeAngelo Williams, Mike Tolbert)

Last year, Carolina ranked No. 1 in the NFL in overall rushing efficiency. And while Cam Newton's 706 yards helped the cause, the Panthers' backfield is loaded because there's high productivity, and no drop-off. Both Stewart and Williams averaged 5.4 yards per carry, fumbled one time combined and were Nos. 2 and 3 in the NFL in DVOA, meaning both were far better than the average runner in producing yards in any given play.

Then they went and added Tolbert, who combines the appeal of trying to tackle a 245-pound armadillo with a vastly underrated ability to catch the ball -- only Darren Sproles (86), Ray Rice (76) and Chris Johnson (57) had more catches among RBs than Tolbert (54) in 2011. This running game could be extremely effective in 2012; the backfield is loaded and diverse -- and that's not even counting Newton.

It's about damned time that a legit source started echoing my sentiments.

Just a month ago I posted a thread saying this, and people thought I was insane. Feels good to have my homeristic views be agreed by a respected media outlet.

You are insane. Saying we have the top RB combination isn't much of a stretch, can't believe anyone challenged you on that. Oh wait, this is the huddle.

this article talks about how efficient carolina's rushing attack is.

your thread talked about cam, stewart, williams, and tolbert combined gaining 50k yards and 500 tds...people tried to explain to you that you couldn't just add all their stats together like a 2nd grade math problem.

carolina's backfield can rush for less yards than they did last season and still be the most effective yards per carry group in the league.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
